I have a 97 GMC Cabover Box truck. 3116 cat, allison, air brakes 20' box ,lift gate. It appears to be a T6500 or T7500 there is no markings anywhere as to what it is. it has a GVW of 30,000 here is the VIN. 1GDM7C1J4VJ******
anybody have any idea how to identify it? I've been to all the sites i can think up as for ID and no help. Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks for any help, Scott

Decoding VIN

I was able to fill in a few holes for you. There were a few decoders I could have used to dig further, but they required the full number.

1GDMPC1J4VJ******

1= Country of Manufacture = U.S.A.
G= Manufacturer = General Motors
D= Manufacturer Division = GMC Incomplete
M= GVWR Rating Brake System =
P= Line / Chassis Type = (check, I'll bet the "7" is really a "P")
C= Series = (any chance this could be a zero)
1= Body Type = Hi Cube or Cutaway Van
J= Engine Code = 6.2 L diesel engine
4= Check Digit
V= Model Year = 1997
J= Assembly Plant = Janesville, Wisconsin Truck and Bus Assembly
****** = Six digit plant sequential number

Hope it helps. :cheers:

Tried putzing with the complete VIn and got absolutely nowhere.

what puzzles me is that the link I gave you (official GM) says the VIN is invalid? numbers/characters all correct?

Anyways, trying to find GM med/Hvy truck info online is like pulling teeth. Ford has a really nice VIN decoder for all its vehicles in the Fleet section.

GM doesnt have it unfortunately. Only thing I can suggest now is take it to a dealer, maybe they'll run it for you. Or at least point you in the right direction.

That GM link is for new vehicles to check to see if any new calibrations are available.
