So help me to undrstand this timing we do. I install my dampner probe in the holes closest to the water pump. Then I adjust my snapon timing lite to whatever I want. This usually is 9.5 DBTDC and I'm using the lower hole where a probe "could" fit because it has the mark on the tab. I hope this is correct... Calvin, Is this correct or anybody else with some timing background???
Are you using a luminosity probe or pulse? That changes the timing parameters. The sensor on the crank only tells RPM. It tells the meter when the mark passes, it must be very close, but not touching the balancer. Then you dial in the offset you want (8.5 or whatever) and attach the "other" method of measuring the actual timing. Pulse must sense pulses to the injector, luminosity must be installed in the proper glow plug position. Once everything is hooked up, wires secured so as to not be the fans lunch, fire it up. Run the engine up to RPM spec (2000 for Pulse IIRC) and see what the reading is. Advance/retard the pump to get the reading you want. I used specs on my truck, it is NA, fuel screw normal and it runs great. I've moved it around a little, but it never ran better, and often ran MUCH worse.
What meter are you using? If it's snap on or rotunda, I've used it, but I'm thinking you have something else. I've had four 1480 series Snap Ons, two 480 series and three or so rotunda's. My favorite being the 1480 with a Mac/Ferret/Snap on Pulse adapter.
