Help! Fuel screw isnt where its sposed to be

Tonight I decided that I'd take a chance and turn my fuel up a little to see how the truck reacts. I put the crank on TDC and didnt see the screw so I turned the crank 180*and looked again. Nuthin! So I then proceded to turn the engine over by hand until I saw the screw. I finally found it but it's no where near where it should be. The timing marker was out of sight, somewhere on the bottom!

I then threw caution into the wind and turned it up 1/4 turn. Went for a drive. It's a little peppier but it rolls coal with anything more than 1/2 throttle. Don't need to be doing that so I'll back it off some tomorrow.

Also. Do i need to recheck the timing after playing with the screw?

Fuel screw is nowhere near TDC. Can't remember exactly where it is. Dieselcrawler has that great write up on it. I think it is on the tech section.

Oh thats a reliefe! I googled it real quick and I read or thought I read to put it on TDC.

If you take the front access cover off of the housing, you will find the screw when the dowel is at 12 o clock. I have turned my fuel back from where it was, too damn much smoke. Even with my turbo it's ridiculous.

Ya Im going to turn mine back some tomorrow. I dont get any smoke unless I go up in elevation. How much smoke is "Normal" with a N/A diesel?

Glad you found how to "find" the screw. I have been really lucky sometimes and removed the side cover to find the screw right there. Other times I have not seen it and had to turn the crank a few times because I missed it. For me turning the crank makes for a long cranking to get all the air out. Just opening the cover and adjusting the screw makes for an instant fire up and run fine. I wonder why...

mine started up then died 2x before actully running. ran a little funky for a few seconds then cleared up.

For n/a usually just go a flat, not a full quarter turn.

turning.it up made a huge improvement in acceleration. i picked up 15 mph between the stop light and the telephone pole at the top of the hill. but its smoking pretty good. i removed the cover and as gary said the screw was right there. i turned it back just a little.

WEll you too got lucky and found the screw right there. What you should have done next is pull the front cover off the injection pump gear housing and looked to see where the injection pump drive gear pin was located. Finding the pin location is the only real way to know when the screw is in position.

now i just went after lunch. its smokeless and slow again. im going to take the cover off and just bump the screw.i didnt realize that such a small adjustment would effect the fueling so much.

Ya want'a be carefull adjusting the fuel screw, if it bottoms out, it can shear the drive shaft.
