Those tabs are required to keep the integrity of the fire rings.

I was actually going to suggest that there should be some kind of tab/insert/support thingy in that gaping hole for the coolant, just cause it seems like I've seen them over and over that way, but not without one. Obviously I'm late to the party but glad it got sorted out. Bummer, classic $2 part just to tear the whole engine out scenario.
