Some people, me included, like to knock out those plugs. Then you have 3 choices. You can run 6.9 head gaskets (with the inserts installed!), you can make some small holes in 7.3 head gaskets, or CDD sells head gaskets with the holes already there. The 6.9 head gaskets had smaller fire rings, but that doesn't make a difference on a N/A engine or one that runs low boost numbers. Unmodified 7.3 head gaskets won't help and will make the whole thing a waste of time. Doing this won't make any difference on a temperature gauge, but it will increase the coolant flow inside the heads. &.3 heads are more likely to be cracked than 6.9 heads so there HAS to be something to it.

Something I want to throw in too, I had asked Justin about that cooling mod, head gasket and plugs, and he said he never does that mod, that they cool just fine. So when I put my heads back on I used CDD's modified gaskets (that looks like they just drill the holes themselves) without removing the plugs.

It's not about engine cooling, only about internal head cooling. If there's nothing to it, I'd like to hear the explanation for why 7.3s tend to crack heads more often that 6.9s do. I just like to know why I'm wrong.

Don't know either. Someday I may regret the decision, so we'll see. Not going to say who is wrong or right because I do not know.

Well, had a little time today before the hot sun sets in. Got roughly 6-7 gallons of coolant drained and the fittings swapped. Threads cleaned and gooped, now just drying.

Need to make lunch for the kids and the shade to come back before I run the hose connections and refill.

Oh, 22mm 6-pt deep well goes perfectly over the hose fitting. And 11/16 or 18mm 12-pt will work for the square plug. No wrench fits in there and I don’t have square sockets.

To finalize before testing. Buttoned up and ready to add coolant tomorrow sometime.

I think the 90 might rub on the inside of the doghouse, but other than that. It’s secured and protected much better than before.

I think the effort was worth it, helps me sleep better at night.
