Hey all,

I was thinking I'd love to put mirror heater units and possibly signal lights in my mirrors. Does anyone know how to remove the glass without destroying it? It looks like it's just held in by the trim but I don't want to find out the hard way!

Any chance you would want to do a mirror swap? Might be simpler.
You can get the long west coast style with both of those functions too.

I have a broken mirror I could take a look at/take pictures of if you want. Where did you get those mirrors? I like them

The black rubber gasket does hold the glass in place, and that is it. I am not sure how you get the glass out without breaking it. I tried putting new glass in after I broke one of my mirrors and I broke the new glass as well. If you figure out the secret of replacing the glass without breaking it, please do let us know!

I considered it and it's not out of the question, it just don't "want" to. I prefer the look of the gooseneck mirrors, plus I already have them. eBay has the heater pads for like $15.

They're the factory towing mirror heads mounted on the "western" style brackets. Not to be confused with the West Coast mirrors Jasper is talking about.

I have a broken one out back on a parts truck I could dissect, I was just hoping maybe someone else has already done it.

If that's the case I may dissect the one I have. I didn't want to destroy it for no reason and find out it was pointless because I end up breaking something else important in the process...

The secret may be to use new, softer gaskets. If that's not an option, you could soak them in hot water for a few minutes to soften them up some.

I would probably not purchase those mirrors in the 1st picture. I, unfortunately, bought some aftermarket mirrors that looked similar and they whistled very loudly. Notice how in the 2nd picture it is a nice, smooth, and curved surface that is pushing through the air? Plus on mine the rubber gasket around the edge also caused whistling and needed a strip of electrical tape around the entire edge in order to lessen the whistling. I finally went to the junkyard and found a good pair of the factory Ford gooseneck mirrors--no whistling and they look much better, cheaper too.

Backside of Ford mirror. And I do like the custom light addition.

@austin92 @MtnHaul posted exactly what I was going to say but you do have the basics correct. The mirrors he posted on those brackets you posted. I can post the backside of mine if you want. My mirror heads actually came off an old van. I think that's why I didn't originally use the tow mirror brackets because the body curves were slightly different. If you do the same, the holes in the factory mirror brackets need to be enlarged to 3/8 I think. I also had to reuse the nylon washer from the old mirrors because the mounting bolts were a hair too long on the new mirrors.

I think MtnHaul might be the reason I wanted the light on the mirror anyway, I knew I had seen it somewhere!

@IDIBRONCO thanks for the tip, I never would have thought of that but it makes perfect sense!
