Going the antique route

On July 30th, the Moose Truck will be inspected by my inspection mechanic Jimmy, at Stoner-Wade for the 30th time. I drove that truck out of the same building in July of 1983, and Jimmy has been there to inspect it every year since. Pennsylvania offers an Antique license plate, which does not require a yearly inspection, or annual plate renewal. Reading the requirements for complying with the antique plate, I believe I have been meeting them for some time. I will be applying for the plate with form MV-11, and if accepted, then this upcomming inspection will be it's last. Since I have been maintaining the truck to a high standard all along, the state inspection process has become a bit of a joke, and I see no need to keep giving the state money when I have so many other vehicles they are collecting on. Since I seem to have the oldest rig, it would seem only fitting that I be the first with an antique plate. Perhaps the trip to the Henry Ford museum inspired me to make this decision. I don't know how long God will let me keep this truck, but if it manages to outlast me, I'd hope that fate is kind to it, and that my family would see it preserved in some way. Perhaps future generations will have the ability to see Ford's first diesel pickup in a museum somewhere.

Congratulations on the new adventures of te Moose Truck. I do believe without a shadow of a doubt that the Moose Truck meets the historic criteria needed to earn such a tag. Consider it a new chapter in the Moose country saga.

well you mentioned museum ya know the antique auto musem is in hershey? just a thought for your or your sons old days.

They let you drive outa state with them tags? I know they have restrictions on when u can drive it

^thats why im putting classic tags on mine cuz with classic you can run them after dark and with antique you cannot.

In Indiana, and many other states, the vehicle can only be driven to show or a service center.

The state's only qualification is that you cannot use it as your daily driver. They define "occasional" use as once a week, however there are exceptions for going to shows, rallies, etc. There is no specific language that says you can't drive at night, or leave the state with it. Besides, after all that, it comes down to the issue of enforcement, and the state police are not really interested in such small fish unless your in an accident. If I drive it for a solid 11 days going to a rally, then my average for the year is still only using it "once every 4 weeks". The way I see it, occasional use is 52 days a year, and I'm sure I drive it far less than that already.

so they didnt make you put stock tires back on an such? i have heard that they can do that where they want a stock or hardly modified vehicle to qualify.

once you qualify there are no regulations though on modifications, i know several others that did not head the restrictions on miliage and such and it sounded like there was no sort of enforcement either.

i think over time we are going to see more of this, you are just leading the charge Mel!

everyone asks why i never do it on my IH's, there is so many rules and restriction i figure it's not worth the hassle, and as i shift from vehicle to vehicle i never know what one will be my DD next!

mel,,id go for the classic plates,,cause other states,,might not be so forgiving of the antique aspect..and as others said,,it aint worth the hassle

I contemplated going the "antique auto" plate route, seeing as how the newest vehicle on the place is a 1991.

What I discovered is that the "book"-value, as in taxable value, skyrockets.

The puny amount saved on licensing more than quadruples the yearly taxes paid.

I would thoroughly investigate such possibles before jumping in.
