Yeah, the topic is beat to death right now, but I still have a couple questions. I'm putting new Motorcrafts in early next week and took out 6 of the 8 today to make sure they came out no problem. What is the best way to get the glow plugs out of cylinders 3 and 4 without removing the injector lines? My deep socket doesn't leave room for a ratchet. Do you use a crows foot? u-joint? I'm just trying to see what you guys are doing to try to save myself some headaches.

Also, what does black soot on the tip of the glow plugs indicate? 5 of the 6 removed were motorcrafts, 2 of which were bad. The other was an autolite, but it still works :dunno I was kind of surprised they were faulty since they were motocrafts, but they could be original for all I know. No plugs were swelled or mushroomed so I'm pretty happy about that, but all had soot fairly thick on them.

I used a short extension with a wobble end on it; a u-joint between the socket and an extension would probably work as well.

Just remove the injector hard lines and seperate the problem line from the clamps... But make sure you replace the line clamps... If you don't the lines will vibrate from the fuel pulses and crack. Then you have high pressure fuel squirting everywhere... I know as severl others have done the same... The clamps are a necessity... Not an option.... The lines can stay attached to the injection pump. Don't bend them too much to get them out of the way... Otherwise it will be diffucult to connect them back to the injectors. Those line clamps have a way too short bolt. Replace them with a 1 inch long 1/4x20 bolt... Or try to put them back together.. You will hate yourself reusing the short bolts...:sly

The trick I use is to but the socket on the gp. Then slide the extion through the lines.

When you consider what they have to go through its hardly surprising. How would you look after being stuck in a pre combustion chamber getting blasted with exteme heat!-Flame Thr

Hahaha, ok then. I just got back in from changing 5 of the 8. The number2 cylinder is giving me a bit of a fight, but I think a longer extension will do the trick. Sneaking the 1/4" extension through is a lot easier than the 3/8" extension ;Sweet. I think I will get them finished up tomorrow. Thanks for all the replies.
