Glow plug question

I have eight new Motorcraft ZD-9 glow plugs and they are working fine. My controller has a good long initial glow time (around 12-15 seconds) when the temp is 20F. Shorter at 40F which it hasn't been in several days!

However, when I go to start the truck when it's fully warm (after a short stop), and just get in and turn the key, the engine fires immediately. But the GP's still come on for about 5-6 seconds (I can see it in the voltmeter) and "click" for a couple seconds after that.

Is this normal behavior for reduced emissions on start? Given that a warm engine doesn't need the GP's to start, is it going to hurt them any to be heating for those few seconds while the truck is running?

thanks.

Someone said the factory did add that to reduce the smoke out of the tailpipe on start-up.
