Glow plug help?

Ok we bought a new controller that goes on top on the engine.this is 6.9 btw.any way we also replaced all the glow plugs with diesel rx plugs.they still kick off at 3 seconds.so we still have it on the push button for now.why would the glow plugs be kickin off at 3 secs on the key

Goes on top of? or Screws into the head? The 87 6.9 had the 7.3 controller that is triggered by an external temp sensor. The screw in controller had the sensor inside it and screws into the water jacket on the head; it is considered to be finicky at best..

Have you tested all your GP's? New doesn't mean good. Also, the wisdom of the board says never ever use anything but the Motorcraft glowplugs for replacements.

Where did you get the controller from? There is new and improved electronic controllers on ebay. If the engine was/is warm, then you will get a short glow cycle. Kind of late now, but the best thing to do is change to the later model controller. It would mount like the engine pic below. One shown has a cover to keep anything from shorting out the battery conections.

Engine was stone cold.were thinking of switching to the 7.3 stile.i just don't see what would be causeing it to do that btw we went with the diesel rx plugs because of the 1 year warrenty

I guess my pump is goin out to cause no matter the temp of the engine it don't want to start.it can be at normal temp and if left for 5 mins it won't start with out glowplugs

How are the batteries? Are they low? How about the starter? Maybe its just barely spinning fast enough to start?

It cranks fast.theres no smoke at all while cranking

It started this mornin but died right off and wouldn't restart after cranking for like 3 mins.but I had to go to school so I jumped in the Chevy cause I didn't have time to mess with it

could the pump be loosin prime cause it was plugged in this morning and I was using glow plugs and it would restart after it started and died

You wont see the very small fuel air leaks because the air leaks in before the fuel leaks out. I know that sounds odd but think of the size of the fuel particles compared to the size of air particles. Now think about a straw in a bottle of fluid. Place your finger over the end of it and lift it out of the beer or soda. nothing falls out. Now move your finger and see the fluid pour out. Thats exactly our fuel supply and return system. Any air leaking in and the fuel runs back to ground level causing all kinds of long cranking hell. An electric lift pump helps fix this but its way better to find the air leak and fix that.
