I'm in the process of adding a stock tach to my '84 that did not have one from the factory. So far, I've replaced the dash to a newer one with the tach, and found a gear cover with the tach sensor. So, my question is, what wires do I need to hook up to make it work? I've looked at this wiring diagram and I'm assuming that "speed sensor" (C-21) refers to engine speed (not MPH), right?

(BTW, I used an orange highlighter on the faded gauge needles and they look like new!) (I also found a way to make the dash brighter at night)

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

A guy named Bill Miller with the online handle : DreammachineF250" had a diagram of exactly this procedure in detail over on The Diesel Stop forums, I think he made a profile here but not sure if he switched all his info over. Good luck and keep us posted.

Your truck had the tach sensor already there? My gear cover is solid, if I wanted a factory tach id need a new gear cover as well as a tach.

My cover did NOT have the sensor. I've bought one that DOES have the sensor to replace my original gear cover.

Just be real carefull with the position of the IP gear when you swap cases. Yes, your assesment of the tach wiring is correct. A single wire to the tach, and the other sensor wire to ground is all it takes to make it work.

Unfortunately yes, and since your swapping housings, you have no way to put the pump back on in exactly the same position. Maybe you can get creative with a dial indicator and a magnetic base off of some other area of the engine perhaps.

I've been stripping the wiring out of the 87-91's so the install will look "stock". there's two open slots on your cluster plug that takes the two wires. With your factory tach cluster, it's plug-n-play;Sweet

Soooo a dumb question here. Will the gasser 460 tach work for a 6.9 if wired up???

dunno.
haven't tried one yet. but what I do know is our diesel tach are magnetic field input and the gasser tach is "spark" or actual electric input. I haven't killed a gasser of the 81-86 vintage with a tach for some time, so I can't plug and burn for testing:D

Just lucky. They were in pretty good shape to begin with. All I did was shine them up with tire foam ;Sweet
If you're gauge needles are faded pull the plastic cover off and do the ol' orange highlither pen on the needles. Makes them look new!

Your truck is looking sweet BTW. Hopefully mine will look as nice one of these days.
