I just got my truck back this fall after it sat all summer in the middle of a WVO conversion. We finally got the conversion done a couple weeks ago, and I have been driving it since. Ive got about 1000 miles on WVO so far. The WVO system is very well done, with an auxilary tank, heated lines, a heat exhcanger, electric wvo fuel pump, and a heated filter. It runs just fine on both oil and diesel, and has not died on me yet when switching between the two.
Now to the issue. I put in a new set of Beru's on Friday, thanks to Gary. I did not plug it in on Friday night and the temperature dipped to around 35. Saturday morning, I go to start it. I cycled the plugs twice, then turned the key and it fired up, the high idle kicked in, i feathered the throttle while it got to its feet, but about 2 seconds after turning the key, it dies entirely. Just like it got no fuel at all. So I ran the glow plugs a few more times and cranked, and after about 15 seconds of cranking, it started to cough a little bit. Stop, sit a minute then try again, and after cranking another 15 seconds, it was running under its own power.
Now this morning, same as yesterday, I did not plug it in. Go to start it this morning, its about 45 degrees. I run the plugs twice and crank it, and it fires right up, high idle kicking in, then it dies again. So i kept running the plugs and cranking, but nothing, It doesnt even sound like its coughing, its like it isnt getting fuel at all. I ended up stopping when it started to crank slow, and I put the charger on it and plugged in the block heater.
Haven't tried cracking the injectors yet. I did notice a little bit of smoke coming from the hood vent next to the windshield. It smelled like electric smoke, and I thought maybe the glow plug wires were melting? Felt them and they werent even that warm. The smoke was coming from about the center of the engine, under the air cleaner. Better not be a starter.....
But could that be it, a weak starter that isn't cranking fast enough?
Or do I have air intrusion somewhere, that only shows its face on startup.
