Fried Starter?

Well I think I may have cooked my starter with all the cranking on my old mechanical fuel pump. I caught an electrical smell after cranking and cranking before I installed the electric fuel pump. After I got the new pump in over the weekend all I could get was a click at the solenoid on the fenderwell. I can jump across the terminals on the starter but it turns over really slow. The batteries looked pretty old so I got two new batteries today and still all I get is a solenoid click. I am beginning to think I may have cooked the starter or the solenoid that is down on the starter. What kind is the best starter and where can I get one.

In my opinion, the Nippondenso is the way to go. Seems to work much better than the Mitsubishi starter that Ford installed.

I looked at DB`s site and they have a hi torque starter but it isn`t a Nippo

I run the misubishi I get from a private rebuilder. Spins so fast the engine fires off in about 1/4 turn it seems. Pull the fuel shutoff solenoid wire and you can't count the starter rpm...

I would certainly bench test the starter before buying a new one. I was having tons of trouble with mine, and it ended up being just bad connections, just like many others I have read about on here. Removing it and testing it with a good battery and some cables saved me $100. The connections looked good, and I fiddled with them while on the truck to no avail. Cranks like a champ now!

I got mine rebuilt, along with my alternator. There is a local Auto Electric shop out here, so I guess I'm lucky.. Only 80 bucks for both.

A gear reduction starter is a huge upgrade, but before you spend the monies, or the work to pull the old one to test it. Spend $10 on a new relay. If you're getting the starter to move by bridging it, but only a click when you trip it. It's dead. A new starter won't fix that. You may find that yours is still fine, and it was just a bad relay, and weak batteries.

I have actually let some of the smoke out of mine. (not just a smell, actual smoke POURING out of it) I used to have BAD air intrusion problems. However she still spins the flywheel off. Lightly singed doesn't mean dead.

I just put a DB electrical gear reduction starter in my truck and boy does it start great now. Before it would crank slow and take a bit to fire up, now it fires up almost instantly.
