Haha I hope not. Bought them from a guy on eBay that used to own a mechanic shop and had some extras he was selling. Brand new with needle bearings. They looked nice but that one lifter will not pump up

Well thats a hard lesson learned right there. That be.. If it can happen or go bad it will. So removing the intake and the valley pan.. Its not that difficult but please try this. Add at least 1 quart of trans oil to the engine oil pan. See if that cleans the lifter. Do this before you open the engine and repair or replace this lifter. You can very easily remove this lifter and take it apart on a clean workk area. See if any dirt in causing the problem. Or for that matter reinstall a used lifter from the ones you removed. As for purchasing a "good set" of lifters.. Sorry but I have no recommendations. I gave away my used set with 5200 miles on them a long time ago to another member who got here and lost a head gasket while on vacation.
Really no reason for one lifter to not pump up other than dirt. There really is nothing to go bad internally. Is that pushrod clean or did you look before installing it.

I just started her up again after I blew off some steam and she fired right up and noise went away completely. Runs like a damn champ and all noises went completely away! Couldn't be happier
Guess that lifter finally pumped up and was having a hard time priming

This new engine has a mind of its own. But now it's running very well. Haven't taken it for a drive yet because I ran out of time today but plan on testing it out this weekend. Going to fill er with fresh oil, wash engine compartment since it splattered oil all over the place when I took valve cover off and get it timed at Brian's house in the near future. Thanks for all the help gents. Glad we can finally shut this thread down!

That lifter acting up may or may not be a quality issue. I can tell you at 45# those valves were being pushed open by oil pressure. The lifter is a little Hyd pump and cylinder combined.
This is why I recommend new springs. And sell them too.

If the lifter continues to make a ticking noise during startup and goes away when it hits oil pressure, we can probably say we got a bad one that's bleeding off. Haven't started her up again yet but plan on doing so later today.
This is interesting information about the valves being slightly open even when shut with the weak springs. My only guess is that the slightly longer lift duration with the torque cam caused the Pistons to hit valves due to weak springs either not completely shutting or piston chasing valve when they are about to close. Finally nice to match some answers to the problem. Thanks again for everyone's help.
Next is replacing the junk starter from AZ that I just bought. Solenoid is acting up

Thanks for this great information Russ. What you posted sure makes sence. Its very telling as to what happened in this engine. Some here were ready to blame the new cam only because that was the only different item installed. But now the cause has been exposed and those buyers in the future will know what really needs to be replaced with a cam. At least test the springs if you have no plans to replace them. May save tearing down a new rebuild or shaving seats and valves.

It reminds me of my friend Jordy...working on a ford 3.0 v6 in a ranger.

Head gasket blew....he thought. Had heads redone...valves geound bla bla bla...reinstalled...bam same issue...removes head to take to shop...cracks found...cheaped out didnt crack check FIRST...woulda saved countless $$$ n hrs in labour.

Doing things correctly is never simple or inexpensive yet often works out OK...but sure sucks when it does not work out and ya skip steps etc.

Weak springs will definately respond slow and when one considers the speed of a piston traveling at 2500 rpm...I am talking vertical speed its a marvel in engineering that these engines hang together...never mind u phreaks who bang on the governor all day long on interstates...

It makes perfect sense that the pistons even if chasing valves caught and kissed em with such weak springs.

BTW @typ4 do you hqve a spring preassure tester? My engine has new springs...but...

Let's not pop the cork yet. Drove truck today and it ran great up until the engine reached operating temp and high oil pressure kicked down. Engine is back to ticking pretty bad and it is the same lifter causing problems. So this is a manufacture defect IMO. Looks like the top of engine has to come off yet again and going to replace lifters AGAIN. Don't feel comfortable replacing just the one because I have a feeling they will all go to **** at some point. Teardown will begin tomorrow .

Here's another update. The seller says these lifters are made in USA, Michigan to be exact, and are of the highest quality. He feels that there may be debris in it like Gary mentioned so he is going to send me another one and will see if that does the trick. Getting tired of this teardown nonsense
