-cuss Well... I found out why my motor went hot so quickly.... I lost a freeze plug above the oil cooler. Thats the second time I have lost a freeze plug. The first one was the rear plug above the cooler. Now its the front one.-cuss I will have the motor out tomorrow and taken apart so I can see what damage was done. Then its off the the shop and giving them what for.. Why did the plugs they installed are falling out. The first one poped out with 2 miles on the motor. This one has 5200 miles on it. I have been watching my coolant very slowly going somewhere and saw the tinyest leak of coolant around one plug. That plug is still in the motor but now shows more stains of leakage. So in closeing I should have paid attention to the overtemp lits and pulled over..... If there was a place to pull over. Still I should be able to depend on a shop doing work that is dependable. I have a feeling they had someone working on this motor that didn't know what they were doing. At least installing freeze plugs on the drivers side of the motor. The passenger side is tight and dry. Just like things are supposed to be. It suxs to be me and for sure the shop that is going to be doing so warranty work.:mad:

Or real sloppy installing them......any P-Tex #1 showing? {or equivelant}

freeze plugs ain't rocket sience but they do require attention!

The big question is did they install stainless ones as required or just steel. The ss ones definately hold on tighter, although I HATE convex freeze plugs, wish they had made the engine take cups. Good luck on the confrontation:mad:

Ouch! That would result in a very quick overheat and explain a lot of things. Good luck getting it made right.

Yes Mel... It sure does tell why it got hot so fast and the mechanical gage didn't pick it up. I should have listened to the over temp lite when it came on. What I was doing was looking at all the indications and wondering what was going on plus Looking for a safe place to pull over. But its way too late to cry now. I'm safe and so is my wife. I pulled the heads today. I'm really sorry to tell all but both heads are cracked. So that ends the ported heads... I really wanted to run the motor on a dyno just to see what a clean intake, exhaust and exhaust manifold would produce in hp and torque. I will probably swap over all the valves and precups to my spare set of heads. I have 4 spare heads and all of them measure 4.800 so they have never been milled. At least something is going my way. I talked with Old Mr Bill till just about midnite last night. What a good time we had. He always has something interesting to say about these motors and much more. Towcat was correct about the heads being cracked. I really thought maybe one would be cracked but geezes. At least I was able to do something neet to these motors. The sleeves still have a very good looking cross hatch pattern so I'll probably hone them and install a new set of rings. It just depends on what the piston skirts look like and now they mic out compared to the bores. Any thoughts on boring it out to 0.010 over??? My thinking with sleeves it would be fine but I'll listen to ideas. The rod running clearance per the manual states the oil clearance should be 0.0011 to 0.0036 and I'm running 0.002. So in other words I'm right in the middle at 2 thousands so I'll keep running the bearings. They don't show any wear problems with running oil that was 300 deg. It sure smells bad thats for sure.

You mean it isn't tarmac at that temp?? Well, at least you found out YOU didn't screw up in any way. If you all remember, pudman on the other site lost his engine because of a similar failure on the freeze plug above the block heater..or the block heater itself...something like that. Well, I guess we'll find out if your shop is the honorable type that stands behind their work.
