Found a spring in my '88 7.3l IDI oil pan.

I need to get the pan back on within the next hour... It is about an inch long, very stiff, flat on both ends. It looks like it was coated with something at some point. ?????????????

So what was it?

I was told that it was the return spring for the lift pump , and that it was rather common to install it incorrectly. The lift pump works fine so hopefully all is well.
