For two other forums I visit, there are lots of questions on "what tranny do I have?" so i started to make a list of all the full size ford trannys. Got most of the info filled in, but I'm still doin research. Heck of a lot of work actually, and I thought someone might find it useful over here if anyone was looking at an older ford truck and wanted to know the tranny. ;Sweet

the C6 has been around long before 80... i don't know the exact year but i would say in 80 it had been around for around 10 years

there is also another 4 speed granny low found around the same time as the T-19 (from 67 up into the 80's) it is the New Process 435 or "NP435" you can identify it by everything being cast iron except the top.. it is aluminum... it is pretty much indestructable

the FMX used pre 1980 evolved int the AOD (they are fairly similar) then the AOD eventually evolved into the 4R70W in the early 90's

and the last one that i can think of that was stuck in a truck was the 3spd manual.. still have one of these in my 81

FYI, here are some things to add:

First, the AOD was available in '84, according to my shop manual. Can't verify this for certain.

Second, the 3 speed manual that jlayne mentions was available as late as '84...don't know when it was discontinued, but I doubt it survived past '86. It was a column-shift, and my FSM calls it a 3.03.

Third, for codes...again, this is coming from a 1984 shop manual, so things may have changed. The NP-435 is Code A. The AOD is Code T. I'm not certain on the T-18 and T-19, but one is F and the other is P (more on why I'm not certain below).

Fourth, there were two different 5 speed ZF transmissions out there. One is the S5-42, and was used behind the IDI. The other was the S5-47, and was used behind the PSD. The real difference between the two is that the S5-42 can handle 420 ft-lbs of torque, while the S5-47 can handle 470 ft-lbs of torque. Also, IIRC, the S5-47 locates the clutch slave cylinder inside the bellhousing, unlike the S5-42 that has a bracket holding the slave cylinder just outside the bellhousing. I don't know if the S5-47 was used behind gas engines after the PSD was introduced or if they stuck with the S5-42 for the duration...

For the ZF's, here are the gear ratios, from http://www.rsgear.com/Technical Support/GearRatio.pdf
S5-42 (Diesel)
1st: 4.14
2nd: 2.37
3rd: 1.42
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.77
Reverse: 3.79

S5-47 (diesel)
1st: 5.08
2nd: 2.61
3rd: 1.53
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.77
Reverse: 4.66

S5-42 and S5-47 (gas)
1st: 5.72
2nd: 2.94
3rd: 1.61
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.76
Reverse: 5.24

Fifth, things with the T-18 and T-19. The T-18 section states that it applies to "F-150 - F-350 and Bronco", while the T-19 section states that it applies to "F-250 - F-350 HD with 6.9l Diesel Engine and 7.5l Gas engine". To me, this implies that the T-18 was used behind the small-block V-8's, while the T-19 was only used behind the 460 and the 6.9l. The other part of this, however, is that I know for a fact that my truck had a T-19 originally (now has an S5-42). However, the decoder in the front of the FSM says that my trans. code (P) indicates that I have a T-18 :***: So, I think there's a typo in there somewhere... Also, there are reports out there (of course, I can't find them) that '83 and very early '84 trucks with the 6.9l actually used the gasser T-19, or at least the gasser gear ratios. My truck was one of these...I noticed a major difference in driveability between 1-4 in the ZF (whereas, if I had had a diesel T-19 originally, 1-4 performance should have been virtually identical).

Lastly, FYI, there are '87 6.9l's with factory ZF's floating around out there...they're not common, but some people with this setup have posted on TheDramaStop (don't think any of them made it over here, though)...I get the impression that this was a guniea-pig test before making them standard equipment on the 7.3l.

Hope this helps some with getting everything put together...good luck! :)

the c4 is the easiest auto to ID it has a separate bellhousing like most manual trannys have... the hotrod guys love them, it is tough and easy to work on/modify

here is view of it and its innards here

most of its applications was from the mid 50's to the late 70's

Ok, did some updates.

Thanks warden for the ZF5 ratios. From all I have been researching, the only difference between the T18 and T19 is the fact that the 19 has a syncro first gear. Your thoughts?

The C4 debuted in 1964, and the C6 showed up (cars) for 1966.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: early C6 transmissions used Type F ATF. DEXRON/MERCON WILL DAMAGE THESE TRANSMISSIONS!

Also, you forgot the oddball cast-iron case 3-speed FMX auto. No idea if trucks used it, though.

The Ford T-18 may have been different, but I've seen a couple of T-18's in IH applications, notably an early '70's Scout II. The Scout's T-18 had a different gear pattern than the T-19's; reverse was to the right and up instead of to the right and down like you see in T-19's (both Ford and IH). 1-4 was the same as far as pattern goes; no clue on gear ratios.

I'll look in my shop manual tomorrow and see if I can find any other differences...and maybe the manual will show what gear pattern the Ford T-18 used...
