Today I pulled my apparently kaput Leece Neville heavy duty 165 amp alternator.

I am beginning to think I might want to go with a regular Ford alternator, simply because, especially if I go with a 3G, I'd get nearly the output, and it might be easier to find/ keep a spare at low cost.

Thanks to some info shared by folks in another thread, I was glad to find out that the lower bracket on my engine is the same as usedd for any Ford alternator.

The upper bracket holding the Leece Neville contains sort of a "rack screw" (long bolt through a threaded block to adjust/ tension the alternator/ belts) that as far as I know, is not the same what would have been used for a Ford alternator. The Leece Neville has a pair of bolt-hole-ears on the top, rather than the 180 degree opposite bolt holes that I guess the Ford alternators have (don't have a Ford alternator handy, but I am looking at online photos).

Can anyone tell me if the upper curved alternator bracket for a stock ford alternator on a 7.3 is the same as is used on other Ford V-8s, or is it specific to the IDI? There aren't any good salvage yards nearby without going for a significant drive, and I can't even be sure whether I'll find an IDI at the one good yard I know of.

Thanks

Personally I would keep the Leece Neville alternator and have since I owned the truck I do have. the only difference I would make is to have a Leece Neville with external rectifiers which they do make. I was told by an owner of an automotive electrical shop who has been in business for the past 40 years is that the only thing that causes the Leece Neville's to go bad is the rectifiers because of the heat from the engine. Having the rectifiers out of the alternator and in the cab under the seat would solve that problem and as I said earlier Leece Neville makes such an alternator that would bolt right on.

Having a smaller case alternator with the same output of the Leece Neville is going to run hotter than the Leece Neville does. If you go with the externally rectified alternator that Leece Neville makes it will probably be the last alternator you will have to buy.

The link is the externally rectified alternator that I am referring to. Which by the way is a 200 amp alternator.

Removing a Leece-Neville in favor of anything else is kinda like becoming a vegetarian; you may not starve to death, but life just won't be nearly so good anymore.

As for ease of finding a replacement, if you use a 110-555 160-amp Leece-Neville, "J"-mount ?? I believe ??, just about any truck-stop in the world has these for sale.

A wise man keeps a spare under the seat anyway, regardless of it being a 1G, 3G, or L-N.

They are far more common than either the 1G or the 3G. ;Sweet

Well.... I don't keep a spare alternater behind the rear seat.... Yet...:D I have been known to have a spare injection pump back there... But only because I had reason to think my running pump was having issues driving 2100 miles across the country.... Road trip spares are important thearpy while driving long distances...:sly
