foam filter suckedin turbo!!!

so today i got a new air filter with the foam that goes on top...i put it in this morning and this evening i was playing up in the hills on the way to a lil barbecue spot. and half way up this hill i lose all power and tons andtons of black smoke behind me so i back down the hill and shut the truck off. i pop.off the intake cause i thought i ate my turbo and there it was...the foam...so i pull it out and ckean it up but it is tough to turn...i start it and shut it off,while watching it and it stops spinning instantly at shut off...so i start it back up and let it free rev at 2000 and shut it off again..and thank someone!!!! cause it is 99% perfect...i say 99% cause i know some damage had to have came from that but it spools the same...just curious anyone else had this happen

Thank goodness the turbo sounds like its ok, now throw that foam piece away every time you see one. It is supposed to be a pre filter, sounds like you had it on the wrong side of your primary filter, rendering it useless and a hazard to your turbo.

Like said, its supposed to go on the bottom of the filter. Man that sucks though! I hope it didnt do to aweful much but I can only imagine what some foam hitting an impeller spinning a couple hundred meters per second will do.

i was told it is to stop oil, from soaking the filter...haha thats where the one was in the turbo kit when i bought it and thats the way i put in the first filter in when i bought the kit...i just figured thats what it was haha...wow brilliant

Chances are it passed through, but and big but, you are going to need to run a compression test and leakdown test to see if you damaged any valves as any large chunks were passing through or worse any pieces of turbo impeller were passing through.

There is a mesh screen on the intake just before it enters the intake runners. Hopefully any remaining chunks are sitting on top of it. Pull the intake snail and have a look.

The previous owner of my cousin's Cummins/Ford truck built a home-made cold-air intake using plain old hardware-store rubber plumbing boots, instead of actual intake boots.

After my cousin had owned the truck for a few weeks, it sucked one of the plumbing boots through the turbo and the shrapnel from that went plumb into the cylinders, costing him the turbo AND engine, plus starting a small engine fire that required him to repaint both sides of the hood, all over a $3 flimsy slip-boot from the plumbing department.

You are real lucky if your episode is only a good free lesson on intake air.

This was a lucky escape if no damage resulted. And a good lesson.

Did something similar once on my old diesel Blazer... which was mostly a 'wheeling rig. Put some of my wife's old ***** hose over the intake (pre-fitler) to slow down bug ingestion. Short time later, I discovered it was gone. A little later I found that the truck had EATEN the ***** hose. It was wrapped tightly around the K&N filter. Ruined it in fact by crushing and distorting it. Didn't get past the filter, though. Lotta airflow into a turbo diesel!

Wow! That could have been a disaster for sure. It's good that you've likely escaped without major damage to the turbo/engine. Any photos of the filter? Just curious as to how that all works on the ATS/Factory turbo system.

it just barely got the corner...and its funny it took some force to pull it out of the filter housing the rest of the way and i dont know what i was at boost wise when it happened but im sure it would have been close to 15 lbs

Looks like a mouse was hungry. Luckily that looks like a rather small amount of ingestion, I was imagining worse.

Same here... I imagined the whole thing GONE.

There isn't going to be oil getting into the paper media anyhow, since the CDR deposits it's load downstream of the filter.

i NEVER use that foam prefilter. the one time that i tried it, it sucked my filter minder down INSTANTLY. that was with a brand new filter and pre-filter. took the foam out and all better.
