7.3 IDI Turbo Diesel air filter question

I have a 94 7.3 IDI turbo diesel. I’m in the process of replacing the air filter element. Underneath the rectangular 1.5 inch thick pleated paper air filter element, in the bottom of the turbo airbox, is a rectangular 1.5 inch thick blackopen cell foam rubber element that is for use with severe service. I found that the one in my truck is disintegrating and I would like to replace it. Ford dealership as well as auto parts store counter guys are unable to even find a part number, let alone supply this part. Anybody have some useful information as to how I can replace the black foam layer underneath the air filter? Thank you for any assistance.

Pictures, turbo type ect would be best if possible. I have a banks turbo with a lost box so it’s got a tube that lets out near the battery with an open “cold” “hot” air intake.

Napa 6317 if I’m not mistaken. Any parts store should be able to cross reference it. Then make sure you take old one with you to make sure.

ATS factory turbo, these are the numbers I have: Purolator A44853, Wix 46317.

I think that the new filters come with the black foam piece, but I might be wrong.

Thank you. It looks like the Wix is the correct replacement that includes the foam block. Amazon shows this item as including the paper filter element and the open cell foam element. Amazon shows the Purolator as just the paper filter element.

How much do you gain in air flow removing the foam?

Not enough to shake a stick at.
The foam is for cold climate (snow) and extreme dusty areas. You can get the filter with and without it on there. Both work just fine.

It would be interesting to see an air flow test on a filter with and without the prefilter both new and a used filter say one with 30k miles with and without the prefilter to see what if any differences. Also a dyno test using new and used filters.

Years ago I bought a filter for an N/A 7.3 at NAPA and it came with a foam wrap pre-filter. The difference with or without the foam was noticeable.

The owner of the shop I used to work for said that the foam caused the engines to burn more oil so we threw all of the foam away. I have no idea whether or that's true. I still don't run the foam on my air filters, mostly out of habit. I rarely use it in dusty conditions except for our fairly frequent very windy days when there's dust blowing off of the fields across the highways.

I have the exact same engine, and found this cross-reference chart, although I don’t see the Wix, and I’m sure some of these are discontinued.

I have the Fram CA7403. It does not include the foam severe service element, just the pleated paper element. I purchased it because it cross referenced with the motorcraft part, only to discover it was not complete, which is what prompted me to post my question here.
