electric fuel pump- does it have be below the tank

the location that looks best( not considering the capabilities of the pump) i two inches after the fuel filter- just enough room to go through the tank selector solenoid which will be moved near the heater core lines.

I read that the Mallory gear style pumps work for what i am doing: WVO & WMO

I would appreciate any ideas

Yes, a mallory pump would need to be mounted below the tank. About the only pumps designed to be mounted above the tank is the Facet Duralift and they can be mounted as high as 10 feet above pickup level for diesel.

If using a mallory, make sure you have a GOOD filter before the pump. THose are nice pumps, but they don't take kindly to dirt. Good part is you can rebuild them completely on the side of the road in about 5 minutes, you can get all of the parts from Mallory to keep in the glove box for an emergency.

I could put the mallory back where the 6 port selector was and put a filter right before it , but that would mean that I would not be able to use the stock fuel filter in its original bracket.
would the mallory pump push that far?
is it worth it to have the pump and filter in the engine compartment?

Check out this recent thread, pretty well covers the questions on the Facet pump
It's very nice having the pump up under the hood, and those things have their own filter screen with a clear bowl so you can see when it needs cleaning. There are a few guys running WMO blends with the things.

Why would you not leave the stock filter in place? Pumps push better than they pull. what is the part number for the Mallory?

My holley blue pump is mounted higher than the tank level and does just fine.
