hey guys,

got the f150 going and prepping for sale. need help asap.

91 F150 e4od

engine runs well no issues there.

transmission

if I put in D and start out...lugs engine as it seems stuck in hi gear and tc seems locked up.

If I start in low then 2 then d all good shifts fine manually up and down.

reverse works well.

makes no difference cold hot none.

no check engine lights

dash OD switch does nothing that I can tell and womt light up

all i know about these transmissions is they dont require a third pedal or hand shaker.

mechanically compitent...but know nothing lol

please help me as this truck should be getting swapped for 92 rc 4x4 f250 7.3 e4od which also has a bad trans...apparently only reverse works no forward gears...truck sat for 7 years.

please help me with f150 wowes.

AFAIK the brick TCM does not have the ability to blinkthe LED on the OD cancel switch, this is a '92-up feature. Are you 100% certain that you actually have 1st gear? If one of the shift solenoids (SS1) is dead you will lose 1st and 2nd in auto-shift mode, shifting manually will give you back 2nd cause at that point she runs on hydro-mechanical engagement which bypasses the shift solenoid. SS1 does not affect the 3-4 shift tho, so you should have 2-3-OD when you combine the manual shift with the OD switch on the dash.

If the other shift solenoid (SS2) is dead you end up with 2nd and OD in both manual and auto-shift, no way to manually select 1st or 3rd as there is no hydro-mechanical backup circuit for 1st gear like there is for 2nd, and 3rd gear is purely electric control and wants SS2 alive and kicking.

If the LED is not lit up then the command was either not accepted/executed, or wasn't received in the first place - the bricks don't suffer harness issues like the OBS tho, so if the LED remains unlit then my guess is the command was received but for whatever reason execution was impossible, which would set some code in the computer memory for your to review but it won't tell you about it cause it can't blink the LED quite yet.

You really need to have some codes pulled from that thing, they are a great indicator as to what the TCM could be struggling with. Alternatively you'll be measuring resistance across shift solenoids, TFT sensor too cause it can reportedly disable the low gears in auto-shift mode and make you start off in 3rd.

Thanks for this info, I'll go drive it again and see if I get 1 2 3 or 2 3 OD not familiar with the trans it sure seems 1 2 3.

Now I hear of solenoid packs and this and that but ...but.... *** are they?:dunno Please remember I'm an idiot in this thread LOL.

Inside the trans oil pan there is a pack of electrical solenoids that tells the trans whats neded to go down the road. Maybe 6 or 8 bolts keeps them in place. Worst part of working on them is the atf dripping on you. Because the od lite is not on maybe you need to check the tps voltage on the throttle body.

Here are a couple pictures for you, Al. This is what you can expect when you drop the pan on that transmission. Once you do this, the filter is easy to replace. That's as far as I went, replacing the filter, the pan, and all the fluid.

My original pan had NO drainplug. That makes for a messy job when you drop the pan. I replaced that with a deeper pan. It holds more transmission fluid, and has a drainplug. I can find the Ford part number for you if you'd like one.

Great pics Ken. Those pans with no drain plug have a couple of longer bolts in them. They are longer so as you remove all the other bolts the pan is able to slant to one corner and drain out some of the fluid.:bs Sorry but just had to fly the flag. The pans need a drain so later on all the pans had a drain. Gees.. I wonder why. But most any wrecker E4OD trans from around 45 and up will have a drain plug. If your going into the solenoid packs do not use any sealer on the pan gasket. Any floating sealer plugs up the micro ports in the trans. Then talk about issues. I personally have never gotten into the packs but I understand they come off really easy. Just unbolt and bolt up and your golden. Might be a little issue with the electrical but never done this. Others with hands on might chime in on this aspect of the packs.

WoW...thanks for pics and letting me know solenoids in the trans not ON the trans LMAO

Just went to see Jake, he's willing to swap. Checked with Vespar Transport where Jake bought the new batteries and they will honor any warranty on the batteries for 1 year if I get the truck. NICE...love small towns and helps knowing the owner of transport/repair shop!

Now what I've found, is that I've got 2 3 OD not 1 2 3 OD as I thought...stupid me LOL

Regardless it's not my problem much longer, if good to go today I'll be working on swapping an engine soon!

Gotta love small towns and small town crowds sometimes.

Al

Oh ya...maybe try and see if can figure out whats NFG on diesel trans too before pulling engine!
