dually rear-end question

ok folks, for years i have been told that a dually rear end is 7/9 inches wider than a regular 3/4 -1ton truck , pick-up not cab chassis. Here,s what i have a 1993 ccdrw 1 ton . i can get a 1999 f250 4x4 cc srw pick-up. i just measured the rear -end from brake mounting flange, and both rear-ends are within a 1/4 inche of each other. could someone please explain this? rusty

The brake shoes on a DRW truck are wider than on a SRW truck. SRW truck brake shoes are 3"; DRW truck brake shoes are 3 1/2". I'm not sure if that's the only difference, but that by itself would make the DRW axle one inch wider when measured from one end cap to the other, even with the same width between the brake mounting flanges.

From all the information posted here over the years. I understand the dually differancial width is wider than the single rear wheel setup. This is because the dually needs more room so the wheels don't rub the springs. Remember the offset of the dually wheels compared to the offset of the single rear wheel types. The measurements you took could be telling you the same dementions are because someone converted the srw to a dually and used the same srw differancial.. It has been done that way many times using a conversion kit called Arrow Adapters..

5" difference. How do I know? My 93 is a srw adapted to a dually. It has 2.5" spacers on each side

I'm pretty sure its closer to 3", Wayne.

I swapped rear axles and the DRW axle moved each tire out about 1.5"...

Yeah your correct. Was thinking of the front. They are really spaced out

I believe, if I've been listening correctly over the years, that there is also a difference between a dually axle for a pickup, versus a dually axle for a cab-chassis. Not sure, just thought I'd throw that out there.

Mel is correct on that. The frames are narrower on the stripped chassie rigs...

just measured yesterday working on my cc450 build yes the cab n chassis are narrower than dually rear i was comparing my 350 cc dually 4X4 to the 450. cant remember exactly how much (and don't have my note book with me to look) but i do remember the springs are 2"

no i've posted on 7 different sites. and no i have not got my answer. surely out of the thousands of members on theses boards, some one has the mesurements on the obs rear-ends vs s-d rear-ends. i don't need spring pearches or bolt circle.

Theyve given you a few answers already.

pull your wheels of and see if it has the adapters to make it a dually.youll probably find the answer you are looking for.

Just layed in the snow for you.a true dually rear up to 1997 is about 62"from backing plate to backing plate.

It's only a 3" difference...they could hide that in a truck...

94f450sd thank you sir for that. Matrix it looking like the 99 sd srw rear- end is wider, like the dually rear-end . just got to work to find a flat on the 99 in question . if i have time i'll pull the wheels
