Will a DT466 fit under the hood of our trucks? How about a DT360?Are they the same size just longer stroke or bigger holes? If they won't fit,can can the truck be modified to make it fit?Body lift,Cut the firewall and weld in a hump.....

I imagine you'd need to do a body lift and make a doghouse in the cab, like that guy who put a Cummins C-series in an F-350 did. Not undoable, but it'll be quite a bit of work to shoehorn it in...

Some guy was doing it in a 70s era F-series, I saw some pics but I never saw that he finished it. It would be sweet probably get comparable fuel mileage to an IDI in a 1/2 ton in a 3/4 ton p/u. I was under the impression that the 360, 460, 530 and HT570 were all the same block, just bore and stroke differences. I may be all wet though.

Yes it can be done and has been done. Here is a post from a while back about doing the same repower you are talking about.

There is a link to another post about DT466 conversions and a video of the truck pictured making a pull.;Sweet The truck in the photos has moved the radiator into the bed, but otherwise, you will need to cut the firewall for clearence. Not to mention beef up the frame and add some Rockwells if you are bombing it. The DT466 can make really big HP with less money and less loss of reliablility than a 5.9 Cummins.

Not to mention that you can pick up a DT466 for a bit cheaper than a cummins. It seems like these days the cummins is the rage and you can't find a running engine for less than $2,000-$3,000, just for an old VE pumped 12valve. Just two weeks ago I went with a friend and picked up a good running p-pumped dt466 big lifter engine for only $500. I am sure you could find another if you wanted, I think the guy might have had another where we got this one. You can find running dt466s fairly frequently for $1,000 or less.

Make the Allison or Spicer fit. There's a guy that put a Cummins and a 10 speed in a big, lifted Chevy 1 ton, another guy put a DT466 and a Spicer in his 1 ton Chevy based dump truck, so it definitely can be done. Besides, that DT will make mincemeat out of the P/U spec trans.
The only other answer to doing something like this is to turn a MD into a pickup; seems a heckuva lot easier.

Midnight Rider said something about getting the extra length you need by extending the front of the truck frame rather than cutting into the firewall. I don't know how hard that would be but if feasible it would be a more useable, neat installation and you could probably mount a radiator in the usual location if you made it long enough. The DT probably uses a standard SAE3 bellhousing like the 6.9 and 7.3 did without the Ford adapter plate, but I am not 100% sure on that. Probably getting a big enough trans under the truck to handle that thing would be more of a challenge than bolting it to the DT. It could probably be mated to an E4OD or a ZF5 but anything other than a stock DT would probably eat the pickup trans as already mentioned.

Yea. Please see if he has another. Thanks. Even if it is too much work for a ford I got a deuce with a bad motor. Or my military wrecker.

I agree!! Hell I would love to do the work related in fitting the cab and bed over an International chassis. That is how I (and may) do it. Of course along with a Spicer 7 speed.

Now even though this may be easier (at least in thought), it's probably cheaper to convert our trucks to accept this engine and drivetrain like what you guys are talking about.

It would be way cheaper to buy an early 90s F600ish truck and put whatever engine/trans you want in it. They are dirt cheap and can take any of the mid-sized diesels with little effort. Get a low profile city delivery type truck if you can and slap a pick-up bed on there are rock it.

DT466 puts out anywhere from 180HP to almost 300 and around 500 - 800 Ft/lbs of torque. Max rev is like 2600 RPMS, so with a little work you could get a built E4OD to hold up to it, how would a built C6 with GV or T19 handle it?

Edit: The E4OD and the 4R100 are very simular, not a whole lot of change and the 4R100 was used up untill 2003, so any big HP powerstrokes had to run through it. I would say it would be fine if built right.

subtle hijack.... I bought a pickup chassis from a bloke in his 40's that ran the family farm equipment, the last tractor his dad bought new was a cornbinder, it were a diesel, and a straight 6...

I still have the sound of that in my head, want it.

how does one find out what engines IH used in thier tractor line, and hp/tq output?

Damn, that sounded sweet.

It were a dead ringer for this 'un, w/o the cab....
