Do I need a lower radiator hose with the spring in it?

I'm filling the truck up tomorrow with Fleet Charge Pre-Charged coolant. Changing out the water pump, and rebuilding the oil cooler. I figured it would be a good time to get new hoses. Reading another thread this evening icanfixall mentioned the possibility of the lower radiator hose sucking closed if it doesn't have a spring in it. Really? My new one has no such spring. I got hoses for a 31" radiator - they asked 37" or 31" and since no dimension of my radiator is more than 31" except diagonally I said 31".

Never mind. Pulled the spring out of the old hose and put it in the new one. Problem solved. Too bad we don't have a smiley face banging his head against a wall.

Well maybe I shouldn't admit it but I actually clicked on the extra icon list and went through it twice, just missed it. I figured it got killed in the new forum look switch. Today is the fourth long day of early mornings and late nights doing some much needed repairs and upgrades to the truck, I'm getting pretty tired but trying to still think straight and not goof anything up too bad. I put the water pump on last night and realized... I bolted the fan on the fan clutch BACKWARDS!!!!!!! So now I get to take the fan clutch off, flip it around, and put it on again. Unbolting the fan (I think) was helpful in getting the clutch off. I'm tempted to cut the fan in half so it can be semi-easily removed, but that would probably stress the clutch in a way it wasn't designed for. I'd just love to get rid of this man-killer of fan and go electric. Right now I sit in way too much traffic to be comfortable running no fan.
