This is about my 87 f350 4x4. I have read here about complaints with the early Sterling short pinions being trouble. Well, I have one and when fiddling with the drive shaft, I found the pinion to be all loosey goosey. This rear end is a dual wheel for a UV (unfinished vehicle), meaning that it is narrower than a standard rear axle by about 3-4 inches. The question is, do I rebuild it or look for a later SRW Sterling to replace it with? I am not married to the need for duals on a 4x4, but would be interested in any arguments for/against. Thanks!

Tighten it up with a impact and drive on. I did that to mine and it hasn't worked loose yet. That was about 5 years ago.

As long as the pinion splines and yoke are good.

This is on the short list of second gen mods to my truck.

Well yeah. Lol
Definitely check everything first.
I wouldn't hit it with a impact and call it good. Lol

If the yoke still fits the pinion good, clean up the threads, and use green Loctite. Make sure not to crush the sleeve anymore.
