Open or limited slip? I ran the cheap stuff from Walmart ($15/g) in my 27ft RV with a reusable diff cover gasket because it was so neglected and I knew it would need several oil changes to clean it up. It lacked limited slip, so no additives were needed. 75w140 or something like that, but I stay out of very frigid places and it was always under a heavy load.

Synthetic or conventional any gl5 75w90 or 80w90 will work. If you're towing a lot or heavy like an rv, you can use a 75w140 instead. Use a bottle of friction modifier if you have an lsd, even if it says it's added already in the fluid you choose.

They're not too picky in my experience, just check/change it every now and again when it starts to look bad.

Heavy high speed towing, 75/140 syn
Extreme cold, like consistent negative temps, 75/90syn
Regular all around use, regular 80/90w is just fine.

No downside to the synthetics other than cost.

SYN 75/140 for me as we dont get wicked cold.

With additive for extra insurance.

It is my experience that leaving out the friction modifier helps get some grip back (used trac and powr loks). Been doing so for 20 years.
