It seems that at some point in time, Ford called for the use of Dexron fluid, at least in the C6. On my truck the dipstick says you had to use Dexron II in order to not void the warranty. Of course nowadays, Ford says that Mercon V replaces all the previous fluids, but I was always under the impression that Dexron was a GM trademark. I realize that Dexron and Mercron are essentially the same thing, but if so, why would Ford have specified a 'rival' fluid???

And here I thought Chrysler transmissions specified ATF+4. Maybe the older tranmissions were less picky about what they needed.

Dexron is a GM spec but it's just a set of specs given a name. Lots of things called for Dexron II. I think that's what my 01 Subaru trans calls for.

Here is some light reading to add to your confusion. All the dextron fluids I find recently are dextron/mercon. If you look at the the manufactures sheets you will be even more confused as i have read some that replace all gm dextron fluids but say nothing about fords that require dextron. I liked it when Fords took type f period.

transfer case fluid but not for transmissions?

My advise drain it, including converter or have it power flushed thru the lines pick a brand and type fluid and stick with that brand and type. I hate mixing brands in anything oil, gear lube, atf, etc.

Do not have it flushed. It will break crap loose that is perfectly happy where it is. And then it will plug the lube circuit and smoke the geartrain.
Atf+4 never existed before Chrysler electronic transmissions. All previous used dexron of some grade.
Type f promotes firmer/ quicker shifts in old autos, th350/400, 727/904 and such. Ford went to dexron for softer "butt shifts" in late 70's according to my friend that used to chem engineer at Chevron.

No plans to get it flushed, in fact just got finished installing this:

It was a bear to get in there though. I had to grind the fins down to get it to fit without hitting the crossmember and then trying to get those bolts in at the back of the pan was an absolute PITA. But at least now I can easily do a few drains and refills and gradually mix in the new fluid.

I noticed that Ford also specified "Type H" for the C6 at some point. Never heard of it before a few days ago. It's no wonder people get so confused about all this.

That was a loooong time ago.

If you drain the convertor you can do it all in one service.

Tractor hydro oil in your c6? Why not just regular transmission fluid? Figure I would ask to see if you had any better results running that combo
