What are some common reasons for the oil pressure to go up? If the oil gauge is accurate and cold weather isnt the case, what would be some common things to look at? Also what should the oil pressure be at idle and also while running 55mph 2k rpm?

Is it different between the 6.9 and the 7.3? I have a 6.9 but I'm curious and trying to learn some basics here.

Oil pressure gauge on a 7.3 is a switch. On is like ~10 psi. Over that you get "normal" - any variation is simply due to voltage and temperature of the components.
6.9s do have an actual oil pressure sender, but it's not terribly accurate, and can go off when things are OK.

At hot idle, 10 psi is acceptable, 18 is good. Seeing ~30 while running down the highway at 2k RPM is good. I've seen up to 50 cold.

Now here's the thing: If your pressure is low, it's *not* due to engine wear!
Low pressure is due to the bypass being stuck open on the oil cooler, which results in lower overall pressures and especially low idle pressure.

However... as long as you are seeing ~10 psi at hot idle, you are fine. These engines push a /lot/ of oil through(high volume low pressure), and it's not really a problem.

Also, I believe that both the 6.9 and 7.3 have the same oil pressure specs. IIRC, you have a mechanical gauge, so you don't have to worry about the factory gauge.

I do have a mechanical gauge. Problem is I'm running 40psi at idle and pushing 70psi highway. Changed oil and filter yesterday and no difference.
I will try changing the gauge with a new one soon. But if that doesnt work I'm trying to figure out where to look next.

How is the oil bypass issue usually fixed? Let it soak in Atf?

Don't know what everyone's deal with atf is. Lol it's not a miracle cleaner.
Take it out and clean it. Brake clean, maybe some steel wool or a fine sandpaper.
Iirc, some have had it stick closed (highest pressure) and blown oil filters apart.
