Just curious, how much does it advance the timing?

AAh,, I'm wondering if it'd be a worth while power adder when towing? I've been reading a lot about how the gassers bump up their timing with water ****. Would it be a good idea to put it on a toggle switch for when I need more pep?

If you did, I would watch the EGT's, the DB2's advance and retard timing as they change rpms though, I believe it only advances the idle advance, although I'm not positive.

Mine is on a toggle, and I only use it when the engine is cold. I've heard it advances the timing anywhere from 3 to 6 degrees. If you're timing was set right, advancing it wouldn't gain you anything, and besides that, the cold start advance only seems to change the timing up to about 1000 rpm. Just gives it a nice rattle when you let the clutch out.
Kind of handy every once in a while to have the high idle on a toggle though...

I think some of the answers are confusing the pump internal cold advance and the fast idle. Both work off the same thermal switch located behind the thermostat housing too. I thought I read something a few years ago from Mel that the cold advance was something like 20 degrees. I know he will know the facts about this as I'm no authouity on the injection pumps. Some members have installed a toggle switch and use it whaen they pull a grade for the extra hp it gives us. Its something you need to watch carefully when in use on a working hard engine.

That's why im asking, I was wondering if the water **** will help a diesel like it helps a gasser. Corey (dieselcrawler) timed the truck when I first got it so I know its spot on. I dont want to bump it up at all, I figured the advance solenoid would be a good way without moving the pump. This is the first truck I had that they work lol. My old 250 the wires were gone and I didn't hook either of them up on the scout.

FWIW I've had my cold timing advance solenoid stick ON before...the most recent time was while driving back from L.A. a few years ago, and the solenoid decided to stick ON in Bakersfield and I couldn't get it to disengage. With the way the engine was rattling for the rest of the trip back, I'm pretty sure that the timing advance advances the timing across the RPM range...

I'm getting older and things are not so clear as they were 5 years ago. Wifey tells me to exrecise more... So I'm looking at the neighbors closely....
The work I do around the house and yards just isn't getting it done so I need to look elsewhere for a workout. Going for a run is not going to happen either. Working on the civic she melted down sucks too. Touching my truck makes me feel good inside.... Rambleing to phone sales people gives me a big laugh.. That right there is exercise of the body and mind thinking on my feet as I go into whatever comes up. Sorry I thought the 20 degrees was something that had been discussed here but I guess not... I'm making notes now. Can't continue to make the same mistake....
