I took my clutch fan off to replace my water pump and I placed in thread nut side down on my work bench. It sat there like that for 2 days I picked it up today to put it on and there was a puddle of oil under it. Why would it leak oil and is that an indication its junk? Is there a way of testing them?

Well that was an expensive mistake. Not the first and won't be the last I am sure.
Maybe I should go electric fan now

Yes your fan clutch is now ruined but it was going bad anyway. If there a buildup of dirt around that shaft seal. If so that tells me it was shot when you removed it. You just found out the easy way before you reinstalled it. All this is a good thing in the long run. Take it off once and trash it. Install oem factory one. Not some aftermarket Hayden clutch.

Mind you, having it leak that much means the seals are probably going and even refilling it may or may not last for long.... on the other hand it's way cheaper than a new clutch.

Thanks for the fan offer but I think I am going to go electric. has anyone ever put something together like this? Our sheet metal fab guy at work owes me a favor so this might be it.. Would need to figure out what fans to use.
I drove the truck yesterday with no fan and maybe its just a mental thing but it seemed a bit snappier.

You will definitely gain a little without the fan. You took it off: did you notice how heavy it was? Unless you are towing or using your a/c, you don't need that fan (especially this time of the year in Wisconsin). I ran without a fan at all in mine for two years without any overheating issues. If you tow heavy, there's nothing that will move as much air as the clutch fans.

I for one am not fond of the electric fan setup - it may work fine for a light truck, but are you always going to be running light? Do you want to set yourself up to be unable to pull anything heavy / drive when it's hot / pull long grades? Even if it's a once a year thing, it's nice to have the ability.
I strongly doubt that the fan drag / parasitic loss has any noticeable effect on fuel economy. Not when you consider the power required to move a 7000 lb large truck in the first place.
