Carrier Bearing Time...

Starting to get that whirling/buzzing sound from behind me...Well, at least this one lasted a loooong time!
Just wish these things acted up when it was warm out!
Dig out the cut-off wheel and where did I put that short length of fence pipe/carrier bearing installer
There should be a grease fitting on these damn bearings!

I jsut had mine done when I had the new DS made! If it acts up....WARRANTY!!!!!!

Don't ya just HATE that! When the weather is fine, NOTHING GOES WRONG.....but Murphy comes along when things take a dip into the freezing temperatures...or it is raining hard....never fails.

Unbelievable...***...the replacement TIMKEN bearing unit isn't sealed >I can look in and see the greased roller balls !
Taking this one back and checking the National brand bearing.

I agree; problems often wait for inconvenient weather to show themselves.

I agree; problems often wait for inconvenient weather to show themselves.

Theone on my E4OD shaft had almost 250K MILES on it and it still spins smooth as glass.

The one off my shaft that PFT screwed up had a few miles on it as well, and it was still good...but it came apart when they tried to take it off the old shaft.

I suspect that the one I have now will never need to be replaced while I own the truck. It is sealed...not too sure what brand it is, but I can find out for you if you like.

I installed a Federal Mogul $20.00...as far as I can tell it's the same 'sealed' bearing I just replaced and lasted a bunch of years
Can't believe the Timken wasn't sealed > that wouldn't have lasted all that long

i just got done completely rebuilding the rear drive shaft in mine today....new center bearing and 3 new u-joints.

now i got a fed. mogul center bearing and im not sure who the u joints are from...neapco maybe.. carquest off the shelf w/ grease fittings. old ones didn't have them

since i don't have a press yet i use the hammer and old socket method to get the u joints out...well one good whack and the socket slipped...shot up over my head and nailed a 4' fluorescent bulb right over my head.....KAPOW! lights out hahahaha

Sorry to hear about that carrier bearing. I've found that i just wear my insulated bibs where ever i go. Because i always end up workin on something and it will always be cold or raining

It sure looked like a match but again, it wasn't sealed >I could just see the bearing cage through the slight space between the outer race...no matter, the job is done with Federal Mogul

Usually those *sealed* bearings can be greased if you catch them when they first start squaking and don't let them go long ( best to do it before they start making noise) but you take a grease needle and work it in around the edge of the seal and squeeze as much grease in there as you can, then poke it in a few more spots and do it again and if it quiets down, you are good to go for a few more years. That grease just dries up and when it does the bearing goes. If you replace teh grease, teh bearing will usually hold up just fine
