brake rebuild

well i am finally down to having like 1.5 brakes on my truck and its not very fun to drive when it comes to stopping. kinda scary...

i want to replace everything in my brake system. i've been looking at rock auto but for two calipers its like $170!! and i'm not sure i trust the quality of those pieces as they are Raybestos....?

i'm gonna start buying piece by piece cuz i dont have the cash to buy all at one time.

where are some good places with low prices and what should i do with the drums in the rear. they have been rebuilt twice in two years and still dont work for crap. i have to tighten them manually all the time. i've been thinking disc conversion and then be done with them? where is that one kit at?

I have to adjust up my rear brakes every other oil change, just one side though...
I got 2 front calipers from AutoZone a few years ago and have had no problems with them, if I remember they were $20-$30 a piece. I could be wrong though.

I wouldnt waste tome with the rear disc conversion, find all the parts for a hydroboost conversion you'll have all the stopping power you need.

well thats fine but my rear wheel seals leak no matter how many times i put seals in them. so then the drums stop working. i haven't found a double seal for the rear hubs yet. if i did the disc then the oil would be leaking into the drum or onto the rotor giving me a brake failure. plus its so much easier to do disc brakes!

i can get them for $40ea at oreilly if one of the guys there buys them for me... might go that route. i'm gonna check autozone though.

YOu have the 10.25 Ford axle? Have you tried this upgrade kit?

Sounds like one of your slack adjusters is in backwards?

well the ford dealership rebuilt them the last time and put the seals in.(which leaked right away...)

what is that kit supposed to do/solve? i've never heard of that before. any chance you have a price?

Have you cleaned the axle vent hole?

yea it cleaned out. i thought thats what it was but the seals just dont seem to last. which way do i turn the adjuster wheel to tighten the drums? i cant remember offhand and dont want to remove the wheel and drum.

Take the axles out and get them to a machine shop. Have the guy set the axles up in a lathe and see if they are out of round. Had a car like that one time and 2 seals later that is what I did and the axle was not running true causing the seal to go bad right away. If they are not out of round he can take a little off where the seals ride and then sleeve them.

hmmm i'l have to try that. it would sure take alot to bend the axle shafts i would think... or do you mean the cross section is out of round? even then what would cause that?

if so i might mention it to my ins agent as my rear bumper is flaking off and rusting already and i'm gonne call her tomorrow.

well i just got a lead on a 1991 f450 for the hydroboost setup! just happens to have a 7.3l and he's parting it out. anyone else want anything? sounds like a great guy to deal with. offered quite a bit even bringing it here close so i wouldn't have to ship it!

it says it needs a rear axle and brake lines. engine runs good. (i dont know firsthand its what the ad said) hes calling me back this afternoon so let me know if you need anything off it.

Depending on the condition of the truck, if you want to fix it I have an F450 axle that needs a home.

As far as the axle out of round issue, I dont know if that could be possible on a full floating axle since the seals ride on the spindle and the axle bolts to the hub. Maybe theres something wrong with the way the bearings were installed???

He did say he had an accident in an earlier post and the truck ran up and over the curb. I think that might have some effect on the axles.

not on the axle shafts. on the spindles yes it would but i doubt a curb would bend a spindle. i've seen harder bumps running over ground at work and on the road than that one. it was only four inches with the ice and stuff built up.

so i found the entire hydroboost system off a 450 for $100! getting it tonight. maybe i'll get it put on tuesday that way i can start replacing blown brake lines quicker!
