On my 89' CC one of the P/O's had it painted with some cheap paint, its now peeling and flat. The original paint under it is still shiny some what.Should I sand down to the original? Are there patch panels available for the roof section between DS front and rear door? Any good body work websites that shows what to do?
Thanks

For the roof section the best bet is the junkyard.

For videos, I've never found a silver bullet for free, but there's some okay stuff searching around YouTube, and you might try the paintucation.com forum

The vids for sale there are pricey but really helpful (and still less than an hour of labor $ at a body shop)

Some of the bigger truck forums have paint and body sections as well.

Definitely get rid of the top layer of paint before repainting. Not sure if you are wanting to run with what's underneath, but I imagine unless the top layer is ready to come off completely with nothing more than a light touch with something like a plastic filler spreader, then you're going to damage it with whatever you use to remove the top layer.

My thoughts were to sand the cheap paint off,, till I get into the factory paint, then prime, sand and get ready for paint booth. The truck is very straight with the only rust spot as I mentioned above. I am thinking about using a die grinder to cut back into good metal to get rid of the rust and then fiberglass, putty, fill the bad spot.
The last vehicle I actually prepped for paint was done back in the late 80's, I am sure things have changed since then...maybe not?
Thankyou for the link, what are the bigger truck forums you refer too?

I only have one question...... HOW THE F is the only place rusted out the ROOF with nothing on the cab corners or over any wheels?!?!?!? :rotflmao:rotflmao

He lives in Texas, sun messes up the paint then it rusts... They don't salt down there like they do up north.

www.ford-trucks.com has a lot of posts; www.fordtruckfanatics.com not as many. Course it may be smarter to go outside the realm of "Ford Truck" - a search just brought up a promising looking site called autobody101.com.

The reason I like the paintucation site is that while it's not that big, the moderater, Kevin Tetz, is fairly active on there, which helps to filter out the noise.

Wrt the filler, a PO did a ton of that on my '73, and all of it has to come out, because the cancer just continued to grow around the edges of it. Now, I suppose he could have done that in '79 or something, which would speak well of the work, but the crumbled up newspapers he used to hold the filler out were too shredded and faded to read LOL

This is 1 of the cleanest old trucks I have seen in a long time, not even door dings on it. It did have a dent that was repaired with bondo on the passenger side with bondo at 1 time. Even for this area it is a pretty rust free truck. I'll get some pics up Sunday to show this old girl off.

Check out the hotrodders.com forum paint and body section , a bunch of links to articles and such and tons of great help there, great searchable archives as well . Great bunch of folks over there, real helpful. Quite a few top notch custom painters, but no prima donas that I've noticed ;Sweet
