Im looking at picking up a 6.9 for an engine swap. The owner believes that the motor is an 86 but he is uncertain. How do you tell what year the motor was produced. I think I remember reading about a casting number under the oil cooler but Im uncertain.

Is there any other way to tell,

Thanks Billy

The very first 7.3 motor block had the stamped in serial number 500,079. Anything lower is a 6.9. How close to this number is the block? You will find these numbers on the top right area of the block near the drivers side of the front of the head mateing area. Probably under plenty of dirt and oil.

Ive got to get together with the owner and take a look. I figure if it is an 86 block, I might as well pick it up and put the injection pump on my truck and possibly rebuild the 6.9. Im going to give the guy a call later this afternoon to find out.
