block heater does not make ready heat...

so i plugged my truck in last night but didn't get up to turn it on till 3hours(4:30) before leaving work(at 7:30)...

well the truck started great and oil pressure was right up.. so i know the heater is working never mind its new and makes a little arc sound when you plug it in...


well i was expecting heat right away... is something wrong for not getting heat right away or was i expecting more...

it was only 1* out this morning at 7;30am

No, there is nothing wrong. it won't make it hot enough to have instant heat in the cab. It would take a larger heater to do that. You should have a little warmth though. But at 1* you might not notice it!

If you have a regular morning schedule, then put that block-heater cord on a timer, set to come ON three hours before starting the engine.

With a freeze-plug style heater element, such as what is original on most diesels, including our's, unless you live way up in the Yukon, in three hours time the engine should be plenty warm to start easily.

However, these types of heaters just do not have the wattage necessary to instantly have heat in the cab; it won't take nearly so long for things to come up to temperature; just don't expect it immediately.


For several years prior to the Cummins swap, I had a KATS canister heater CORRECTLY plumbed in my system; it was the highest wattage size they offered and it did make for good heat in the cab, but it also ate quite a bit of electricity.

I still have that heater and keep intending to re-install it someday.

in 1* temps you won't have much heat after any amount of driving unless you have your grill blocked off.

Mine must not be normal then. It has been insingle digits the last few mornings here and I have plenty of heat. It takes a little bit longer to heat up, but nothing crazy.

yea mine dont need blocked tho i thought of it because it dont seem to heat up all the way...


i have tons of air leaks around my windows any suggestions? to fix that up?

Plugged mine in last night....Started right up...didn't want a headache

Had warm air in 2 minutes for me....but not HOT warm to fingers...

If it's your weather stripping, (aka door seal) some people here were talking about inserting some rubber tubing inside of the stripping for it to expand back out and keep a seal.
If it's just the windows themselves, you probably need new window seals and "dew blades."

These engines (when everything is operating properly) should make good heat without any need for covering the grill. Both of mine will burn you out of the cab, even in below zero conditions. -25F here this AM.

i wish mine would 30* is to cold for me... i hate the cold

but today it was 16* out the truck wouldn't start with out hooking the battery charger up after trying to start it for 10min.. (yes waiting on the starter to cool)even tho the new one is tired already.

i did how ever got it running with just the glow plugs and starter.. but it was a bear..

the battery's aint new but they test good.. ones 1100cca and the other is like 950cc yes they are miss match but are the same brand. ones an amg and the others wet acid.

My experiences with my old 6.9 and many others I have driven are as ^^^ HE ^^^ said; the heater will run you out of the cab, even in super-cold weather.

Once up to operating temperature, I always found it to be plenty warm enough by leaving the heater/A-C switch OFF and the temperature control all the way over to HOT.
