I lost the check ball like a dummy, and the spring was missing. So I used a steel 5/16 ball bearing with a 1 1/2"x1/4"x0.020 spring until I can get a replacement, or if it works good I'll leave it. Fuel flows out when idling, a slow steady stream. It's gotta be better than what was there before with the spring missing. How much fuel should be coming out? Anyone think this'll be a problem?

Not sure what you are asking about. If... This has to do with the check valve on top of the fuel filter housing then you need a replacement piece. Either Oregon Fuel Injection or Conestoga Diesel Injection can sell you one. but be sure you know what size you need. The small is generally thought to be for the 6.9 engines but I have seen them on early 7.3 too. The larger size fits ONLY the later 7.3 return line systems. DO NOT try to mix and match these sizes. Any return line system with the green clamps will be the smaller and the red only fits the later size return lines.
