Bad oil leak

I think I know where its coming from but want some clarification. I'm getting oil leak from up top and its running down around the starter and dust cover and dripping onto the crossover pipe. This truck is factory turbo. I think the leak is the turbo drain and I read on hear that somehow oil on the valley pan drains down the side of the engine how does it do this where is the passage. Can someone show me a picture. Also your view on other possibility of where this leak may be coming from. Thanks

I would check where the turbo sits on top of the pedestal and see if its leaking there. Granted, I have never worked on truck with a banks turbo, so If that is what you have it may be little different. The turbo drains down through the factory hole in the top of the intake manifold, where the CDR sits on the N/A engines as far as I know, and I'm no expert. Ive seen the factory oil PSI sender leak on few truck through out the years so check there as well. Its directly behind the intake on the back of the motor.

Any fluids that drips into the valley pan under the intake manifold will drain out the back of the engine. there is in fact a drain hole plug that holds the rear end of the valley pan to the block. It has a 3/8 inch square drive hex hole in it. Thru that the block has a passage that pours out the back of the block and there is a web that causes the fliud to only drip down on the starter. It can't possibly drips down the drivers side of the back of the engine because of this web. It finally can reach the clutch cover or dust shield pan under the flywheel. Most of the time this mess is a fuel leak from either the injection pump or the return line system on top of the engine. So look for any wet return line caps. Or look closely at the injection pump for wet areas. On a factory turbo the rear oil pressure port on top of the engine is used for the turbo oil supply. Its usually not like it to crack and leak but most anything is a possibility too.

I see the plug you are talking about with the square drive is it open in the center of that plug cause what im curious is how its getting out. My leak is definatly oil i can see it in the valley it puddles over that square drive plug. My understanding was that plug takes place of the factory crankcase vent. I havent tore into it any further im sure when i do itll all make sense. How hard is removing the turbo can it be done without removing the uppipes and downpipe. Thanks

FYI, check that your crankcase is venting properly. If there is any clog or blockage in the venting process, you will have oil leaking out of everywhere. I know I just installed a Mann crank vent that was on my VW tdi for over 100,00m miles with no problem, and the ford did not like it, oil everywhere. Removed the Mann filter and no more oil leak.

The plug you are seeing with the square hole in it is the drain for the valley pan. It also holds down the back of the pan to the block. As its screwed into the block it sandwishes the pan in the fitting. The block has a tunnel thru it that allows any fluids to only drain out onto the back of the bellhousing and down on the starter ... It can't spill out and run down the drivers side of the bellhousing because of the wall or web cast into the block at the top. Your valley pan is draining properly but finding out why is the tuff issue.

so my square plug is hollow in the center. that make a ton of sense. thanks
