motor vehicles are a bad gamble and even worse investment. either way we are going to pay. it's going to be a truck payment or putting money into the truck for repairs and upgrades. it's a choice of what one needs or feels comfortable with.They pop up for 2-4k often around these parts in CC SRW format. My 94 I gave 3k for it and it was fully presentable and running in that stage. I have about 12k into it now, but I'm a little crazy
Agreed! 2 years ago I had a new durasmack that carried a 1,200 payment and the wifes Escalade was another 900. I now fully enjoy being 100% debt free vs. Being a slave to a bank. Although sometimes I have to remind myself the position when something breaks on this old thing. It takes ALOT of breakage on this thing to justify a massive auto loan
I bought mine from the second owner and know the guy that bought it new also. Higher miles but you would never guess it. Wouldn't have bought it, but it was so clean, well cared for, and bone stock. Needless to say I don't intend to get rid of it, but I will keep my eyes open.

Well, I was on the hunt for a diesel 4x4 CC SRW up here in the PNW for about three years, and finally gave up and got a gasser (see signature line) instead. Most of the diesels had 200-300K on them with no documentation of SCA use (which really scared me off, since a properly rebuilt motor can cost as much as I paid for my entire truck, plus I didn't want to hassle with doing an engine job myself either as I have zero spare time with two kids under 3 now).
I don't drive my truck very often, so the fuel economy penalty of the gasser doesn't hit me as hard. I still keep my eye on the market, and if a prime-condition diesel does become available I would certainly be open to it. I really wanted to get one of the newest, non-computerized trucks that I could, and the 1994 Ford 7.3IDI with a ZF 5-speed is the last of that breed.
I still have a diesel car, a 1997 Passat TDI, and my brother has a 1989 F250 7.3IDI, so I still say "fuel" mileage no matter what I'm driving!
My truck was by far the straightest, cleanest, truck that I came across in three years (in the sub-10K price range at any rate), so I bought it.

This truck has a swapped in 7.3 non turbo diesel from a 91 250, brand new starter, all new exhaust, thousands invested. Has a 5 speed manual transmission, comes with rust free doors from Arkansas. Also has a 96 front clip, everything works, can send additional pictures. Dana 60 front kingpin axle, Sterling rear, 4:10 gears, still gets decent mileage, maybe 18-20. Was originally from AZ, not much rust. asking $2500

i see many clean and very nice looking ones down here in FL but few for sale.. i got mine about 8 months ago, no rust and very few dents or dings, clear coat needs some help but awesome truck none the less, and being a 5spd 4x4 just topped the cake off for me ( and the wife loved the captains chairs in front and back).. don't know if i over paid or not but i gave $5700 for mine, and don't regret it in the least bit!!

I actually picked mine up near Jacksonville in '09 for $4K. The bearings and seals in the front end were shot from the sand, but other than that it was in pretty good shape. Standard wear and tear for 170K. I probably would have had $1500 in repairs if I had just taken it directly to the shop and had the work done, but I did the repairs as they happened and probably have a little over $2K in it.
I'm still not sure what we'll do for the next vehicle. Hopefully it is still years away. With the cost of vehicles these days, I still can't help but think that I'd be money ahead to buy something mechanicaly sound (ish) in a couple of years and then start having it fixed/restored/customized. I would really like to work on an alternate fuel source, but for 2 years now I haven't been able to find much, if any time for it. If I could ever get that going, I'd buy another IDI ASAP, and maybe even a 3rd for parts. If only time and money weren't a factore....

Ive been contemplating that truck also, but IT IS FAR FROM PERFECT. It was from down south but has been up here for years and rust is starting. It has pretty high mileage on the drivetrain, and it has a powerstroke radiator in it that is kinda cobbled together. The fuel tanks were completely gutted out and it runs off a transfer tank in the bed.
It definately needs some work and thats why its priced where it is. IF that truck was all original it would have sold in a couple days at that price.
If you were to go after that truck I have a 1988 f250 I am parting out I should have some fuel tanks and the sending units. I have the right radiator but not sure if i want to part with it but I might.
