Any known issues with the a/c panel on 84 vintage IDIs?

My vent selector switch seems to only be able to turn on the a/c or heat the selection of defrost, vent, mix, floor seems to do nothing. Just wondering if there is a lever somewhere that controls the baffles that is known to fail?

Are the baffles controlled by vacuum? Or levers?

It will make a difference if you have AC or not.
Autozone information for the 84:
Dash Controls toward the bottom of the page
Heater core and plenum controls again toward the bottom of the page

Crud. Vacuum. But it **could** just be the door cable...

Put a new vacuum-selector-switch on it (the thing that the levers are connected to).

They go bad and default to defrost, regardless of where selector is at.

Before you change anything find the main vacuum line that goes through the firewall by the heater hoses. Once you lacated it, make sure its not busted. Make sure you have good vacuum there. That is the most likely cause of your malfunction.

Look here. The problem may be the panel door. Ford still carries them. I have 3 on order now. I don't have the part # now, but will have in a few days when mine comes in.
The hinge wears out / breaks and will not divert the air.

as rip says--if some bozo before you dropped something down the defrost vents---goodbye to the shaft the vent door pivots on----been there more than once--when worked at ford shop!!!! and you get to remove the whole air box to replace it~~~~~~~~~~~~~ fun!!

Interesting thread. I gutted my '84 cab a long time ago and have been putting it back together slowly between jobs. While cleaning out the vent I broke that hinge. It's a flimsy ******.

I just got the new door today from the Ford dealer as suggested by Tim (The Warden).

$35.

I've used Marine GOOP on my hinge twice & it would last about 6 months. That was until I found out that Ford still sells them. Taking the dash apart again is not what I'm looking foward to but since the original lasted 20 years, it will be worth it.

Finally found this thread, I'd posted a new one.

So, I'm still trouble shooting my heater vents. Trying to figure out why no matter position in the vent/heater settings I get feet/vent and never defrost.

I have factory a/c. I have the control assembly that has the vacuum harness popping out the right side of it. I've tested for vacuum it's there and it's strong.

One thing I have noticed is that the compressor clicks on before the slider even reaches defrost - it kicks on on the floor setting which is the second to last on the passenger side of the slider.

Looking at the vacuum harness it seems like there are nipples on it that aren't connected, but no hoses dangling about.

Any ideas on how to go about trouble shooting this?

I think I may already have said so, but those vacuum switches are notorious for going bad.

No more costly than they are, and seeing as how you already have it out, why not try a new one and see what happens.
