IIRC the stock 6.9L thread size is 7/8-14 and the 7.3L is 1-14. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I went with the 7.3L because I had a few from trucks I parted out. I’ve never had one leak, not say they don’t from the heater hole. The one that’s on the 84’ I replaced the oring with Viton from diesel Orings.
Picked the wix 33417 for its all in one design. It’s doesn’t filter as good as a 6.9L secondary filter IIRC those are 10-12 depending on brand. What’s a few microns, besides lota 7.3L still on the road.

You must be registered for see images attach

I mounted this fuel/water separator on the inside of the frame near my transfer case (86 f250 4x4). I have rubber fuel lines though so it was easy to splice into. If you're interested I can send you part numbers for everything.
What’s the part number for the filter base you attached to the frame?

I've used 6.9 filters on my 7.3, and 7.3 filters on my 6.9. no problems, they both threaded on and sealed correctly.
I'm not saying anybody is wrong, that's just my experience.

Why do you consider a 7.3 filter head an upgrade? You can just get a water separator (a replacement filter with a drain petcock) to spin on the stock filter head. The 6.9 and the 7.3 filter heads use the same filters, so neither is an upgrade.
Napa has the filters with petcocks for either 6.9 or 7.3. the only difference between the two, is the 7.3 has sensors and heaters in the head and filter itself. 6.9 only has the water in fuel sensor on the head, and heater on the intake fuel line of the filter head.

Rock, are you sure they are the same? when i replaced my friends 7.3 filter i tried to see if it would fit in my 6.9's and the 7.3's threads where much larger than the 6.9's it just went right over the treads
also i did not see any filters with petcocks on napa for the 6.9

Well....I guess my trucks must be different..
I never had trouble interchanging them on my trucks, but who knows why that is.

Perhaps the previous owners had upgraded the 6.9’s to 7.3 filter bases. Also I’m not sure if the Ford 6.9 filter is the same as an International truck 6.9 filter.

Looks like it's time for Cubey to straighten us out on this too. At least the Internationals and the vans use the same filter housing as far as I know.

I'm curious if it was because my two 6.9s were both 87s. I know they did some things that were specific to that year. It could be, they upgraded to a 7.3 filter head for that year with the rocker arms, and GP system.

My bus (1984 IH 6.9) has 2 filters, a primary/water separator mounted on the radiator support, and a secondary mounted on the engine. Both are factory IH equipment with primary being wix #33439 and secondary being wix #33811. The primary is 1"-14 and the secondary is 7/8"-14. I've replaced the leaking primary filter with a racor aquabloc unit.

The spare engine(also an IH) is a 7.3 out of a 1992 IIRC. It uses one fuel filter, which is engine mounted, being wix #33617 1"-14.

Nope. My 87 F250 has the 6.9 filter head. It has the firewall mounted water separator. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that wouldn't be there if it was meant to have the 7.3 filter and bowl.

Both my 6.9s didn't have the factory water separators, and as far as I know, came that way.
