Another IP failure?

Hi All,

My truck decided to stall while going down the hwy. After the initial stall, it started once and idled really low for about 5 seconds then stalled again.

Its home now and it nearly starts, but only gets as far as firing up for not even a second, then it dies again. Lots and lots of white/greyish smoke.

I've done some basic troubleshooting. There is lots of fuel getting through the filter and there is fuel getting to the injectors when the lines are cracked open.

There doesn't seem to be any signs of air in the system and there seems to be a small leak coming from the input on the IP.

I checked the FSS and with a test wire jumping from the battery to it, the solenoid clunks back and forth just fine. I confirmed power is getting to the solenoid as well.

I opened up the top of the IP to see how things are inside and found lots of black debris floating in the pool of diesel in there. I have a feeling the IP failed and is no longer able to build up enough pressure to drive the injectors, but I am no expert on the internal mysteries of the IP.

Any thoughts of things I have missed? I'm leaning towards another failed injector pump at the moment.

Thanks in advance as always!

Sounds like an IP failure right there. I would also check the lift pump before looking into a replacement IP. Any debris in an IP can cause further damage to other engine components such as injectors.

Fast as usual. I love this forum!

The lift pump is new as well. I was running a solenoid type lift pump, but replaced it with a new one thinking it might have failed on me.

Hopefully the debris didn't reach the injectors.

Thanks!

If you further diagnose the IP to be the culprit, be careful when buying a rebuilt unit. Lots of shops rebuild these pumps and lots of shops do a sh***y job when rebuilding them.

That is the injection pump failing when you see "stuff" in the fuel after you remove the top of the pump cover... Most likely it wont get into the injecters because that area of the pump is where the fuel travewls thru after it has cooled and lubed the pump. It goes out the top fitting into the return lines. How many miles are on this pump and injecters...

The injectors are new as of this summer, so maybe 5000 km on them. The IP was a "rebuilt" one from Craigslist when I needed one in a pinch. Its been in my truck for about 2 1/2 years. Probably about 20-30,000km on it.

I would have replaced the IP when I did the injectors, but the bank account said no.

Yes... Thats what your rig wants for Christmas this year...:D With that low amount of miles on it its sad to say you got a barely rebuilt pump. I have the same bank account you have. I get the telling statements... "Do you really want this"...

Yup! Lucky for me this is my toy and not my daily driver. Seems the two of them take turns being broken.

This time I want to get a properly rebuilt pump. I wonder if there is a moose variant for my non turbo 6.9 available?

What is this stuff?? He said it was black. Just curious, wondering where it could come from and how that tells us the pump in going south....

I suspect somewhere in here is at least one important gasket or O-ring that likes to wear out. Since the fuel also cools and lubricates the pump, anything like that which is falling apart will probably end up here in pieces.

Its a plastic piece of the advance mechonisim I was onc told. Mel will know what this is. And the anser to a Moose pump for a non turbo engine is ready to join forces with you. Now there are two pumps. The Baby Moose and the Junior Moore. Both are readily set for the non turbo engines. Give Constoga Diesel a call Monday for one.

I was already on their site looking. I bookmarked it from a link in another thread. Would a Junior moose be able to go from non turbo to turbo without adjustment? I've heard lots of good things about the moose series and I am tired of going through pumps. Even if I have to save up for a few months to get one it will be worth it in the end.

I remember when I first replaced all 8 injectors last summer, the torque difference was so drastic that I went sideways along a corner without intending to. Its been getting more gutless over the last few months and now I can understand why. Hopefully with one of these moose pumps I'll see something close to that initial "wholly crap" experience from then.

I got about 2 1/2 years of hard pulling and hauling out of an unknown used rebuild that cost me about $50. I got my money's worth I think.

Do we, as members on this forum get any special pricing on these pumps?

I'd say you got way more than your $50.00 investment by far... Yes. Any injection pump can support a turbo. Banks just turns up the pumps of any engine they install a turbo on. We can do the same or leave it alone. Ask Mel the cost questions or his pumps on a na or turbo engine later on...

That black crap is part of the governor assembly. Stanadyne changed the revision on this part and the newer ones don't have this problem. It will not pass through the plungers, so no worries about getting it in your injectors.
