Ok, I just completed a trans swap in my F250. Old unit had over 200k on it and was overheating and puking fluid, going into limp mode, etc.

Now for the bad, the replacement unit, which I cannot swear to the history of, seems to have rather hard shifts. The unit is NOT in limp mode, I became quite familiar with that with the old trans, od light is not blinking, and it does go through all gears including od. I know, I should have rebuilt the old one or bought new parts but it was not in the budget.
Before installing the replacement trans I changed filter, flushed cooler lines and replaced with synth.

The relacement was remanufactured at one time, but who knows how many miles ago. Seller claimed it had performance upgrades to provide firmer shifting, but I find this hard to believe.

The trans will shift through all gears smoothly at WOT.

So, should I enlist a wait and see approach, hope for improvement-only about 15 miles on testing .
Or should I be concerned of eminent failure? Is there any checks I can make, possible a electronic part which is increasing pressure?

The harder it shifts the longer its going to last, get used to it. I don't think some guys like synthetic oil though.

The transmission should be fine. Firm shifts are a sign of a modified valve body. I would leave it. Firm shifts mean less slippage. That will lead to a longer lasting tranny.:D

Hmmm, I'm not sure. How do I tell a "firm shift" from a "excessively hard shift" ? I had suspected the seller just mentioned performance upgrades to try and justify the way it opertates, with out actually knowing if it was fact. Should I just carry some spare U-joints with me ?

try to find out what performance mods where done. It sounds like something was done to max out line pressure. Most methods are partially or totaly reversible.

Assuming that this is the result of a mod and not a bad sensor input or some other problem, does anyone know how does running the trans with maxed or high line pressure affect its life span ? Thanks.

life span on the tranny will be good. But hard shifting will cause more damage to the u-joints and to the rear end. If you end up blowing the rear end you and figure in $1500.00+ to replace it. Did a full rebuild on my using ford parts and it cost me $1100.00 doing the work my self. You can get parts cheeper other places but I went with factory.

Your tranny and drive line will be fine if the shifts are firm. Hard shifts are the ones that will bang your head into the seat. That kind of shift will break something.
