Okay everyone for some reason my cold advance has been staying on too long and I dont even know what is going on with my high idle. It only worked once and that was the day I bought it. Guess it doesn't like it's new owner:backoff. When engine is cold lately, my cold advance is staying on too long.....I know this because the truck runs like a bat out of hell when cold. And it also seems like the rpms are randomly higher in hot weather at idle but I can't confirm that because I need a new tach sensor.
Anyways, does anybody know how I can just disconnect the cold high idle and advance from IP pump??? I am not sure exactly what to do....and when I'm not 100% sure, I don't want to mess with things! Any help would be appreciated.

there is 2 different wires on the ip one that is your fuel cut off and one is the advance, unplug the farthest on from you when looking at the ip,

even if you unplug the wrong one all that could happen is it wont start so then plug it back up and un plug the other, the high idle it mounted on the left of the ip if your facing the motor, it has a wire plugged to it just unplugg it

Okay I will give it a try as soon as I am done with finals this week. It's kind of ironic the high idle and cold advance are working now that it's summer time. It must be confused haha

The Cold idle and IP Cold advance is controlled by the sensor close to the #1 cyl. GP. It is closed and provides voltage to the Cold idle solenoid and IP Cold advance solenoid until the head temp reaches ~120*. The plugin to that sensor can easily become loose or corroded contacts.

I wired both my fast idle and timing advance solenoids to a manual toggle switch. I turn them on and off as I please....

how long does it stay on for when the engine is cold?

The advance probably stays on for 5 minutes when I first start the truck and when its about 75-80 degrees out. But on some mornings it won't even kick on. IMO, it doesn't need to be on for that long when its already warm outside. And when it comes to the high idle, it seems to have a mind of its own. I have just got into the habit of pressing the gas pedal a little when engine is cold to warm it up faster. Yeah it takes a few more seconds to start it up in the morning due to WATF, but I don't think I need my advance or high idle hooked up especially if it's not even functioning properly.

You have to press the pedal down once to set the Cold idle solenoid, it's not strong enough to advance the IP throttle without doing that.

Are you saying the sensor for the coolent temp switch is responsible for cold idle and advance?

I do know that much about the high idle. I have tried it many times and like i said, it has only worked for me one time and that was the day i got it. I think it's time to start unhooking things.

Okay here's an update. Just removed the high idle connection as well as the cold advance connection. Started cold truck and took her for a drive. For some reason, i think the cold advance is still on because its like a darn race truck when i give it a little throttle. I kind of like it.....but know something is going on. It seems to quit within 5 minutes of driving and when engine is fully warmed up. Also when it is doing this, it is shifting really soft. Why is it shifting soft??? I know there isn't any fuel/air leaks but know my injectors are wore because she does knock a little when cold. Also has a fairly new IP pump and return line kit and new lift pump. Can anybody help me or point me in the right direction as to what the h*** is going on??? Thanks to all in advance!

Also is it a possibility that the cold advance can turn back on even if the connection is now unplugged??? I don't see how that would be possible but need someone with more experience to help me out here

How many miles are on your IP? More than likely your just starting to have issues with the advance piston sticking. If you have the cold advance disconnected, then there is no way it is on.

There is around 60k on the IP pump rebuilt by an IH dealer I believe. I was just wondering if now that the wire is disconnected and the advance turned off while driving it, if there is a possibility it could happen again.....or if its permanently disabled now??
