Wow, just.......wow. I wonder how many other customers he's screwed over. Seems like there might be a reason he doesn't work for Ford anymore. Dude don't wanna eat his crow, so be it. Find another, REPUTABLE, shop or grab a service manual and do it yourself. Like OldBull said, you can most likely just replace the pushtube and call her good. If anything, throw a new one in and put some air to that cylinder and listen for leaks coming out of the exhaust.

..OLDBULL8 >>.I don't quite understand what your saying about a push rod mark on the piston..

Cntyview>>Pulled the enjector it was fine & had the cylinder scoped, we found a dent on the piston near the center cup 1/4 long right below the exhaust valve ( like a possible glow plug end) with no debrie in the cylinder bore. So with a bent push rod mark on the piston, now exhaust valve ..((Sorry left out and a mark on the pistion.....))
Do you think it took out the connecting rod also?..I'm pulling the head wednesday..if the Cylinder is scored Its (Engine) is coming out anyway. but if it looks ok I was gonna pull the other head or @ lease replace the enjector cups, test the enjetors & ad new seals.....worse case buy a new remain 7.3 from ford or repower to 12 valve cummings..I have a 12 valve sitting around needs rebuilt tho.

nowhere in this thread have you mentioned having a cct (cylinder contribution test) run on it.before you start ripping and tearing into it have it done! Upper end knock in a diesel is a bad injector 85% of the time.

I would have those injectors tested for sure. Your mechanic probably didn't even do the buzz test.

well pulled the motor,,removed the head, #5 pistion is hammered bad, but no object in the cylinder..removed both valves & seats look fine, nice shinny chrome rolled them on flat surface & dont appears bent, turbo wheel looks great spins free....cross hatches on all cylinders look great..no ridges. I'm thinkin of gettin the head checked, remove rod check that & order new piston & rings..check reseal & possible rebuild enjectors. Hard to scrap a motor that looks this good inside except for poor ole #5 piston that took a beating from a object or old glow plug end dropped inside... And for the record We did do bust test, & cylinder contribution test..# 5 & 3 were only weak ones..# 3 has bad backup washer & orings not the best, ready to go out..this would be a cheap fix to the 7500 reman from ford.

and when you get it done,,take it back over to mr master mech,,and tell him what a ****** he was,,for breaking off the gp in the cyl,,,,,,,,,,,,,and tell him you know why he no longer works at Ford......

I was going to say that the knock was probably a busted piston ... but since you already pulled it and found that out i guess that I am a litttle late .... did your blowby have a really strange smell to it .... I would do the Cummins conversion ... I did one in a 93 F-350 cc 4x4 dually for my brother and it ran like a striped ape ... got a little over 18 on the highway and about 16 around town ... was a 90 motor that we installed .. originally went with an adaptor plate and then converted the trans to a NV4500 ... what a huge difference that made ... You can shop around and get a complete OH kit for the cummins for what the one piston and ring set and gaskets will cost for the PS... not a big fan of v8 diesels ....

I did alot of research on the cummins conversion, the bad was moving the zf5 back 3 inches...there goes the carpet, re mod the tunnel, I was told autoworld sold the ac/vac pump mount to use my equip & alternator, about total 6000 for 7200 pump & rebuild the 5.9 & all adaptors...not inclding the drive line cut to extend the from & shortin the rear...I can replace the pistion/ headgasket & enjector cups & remain my enjectore for about a 1000...its my daily drive so I have to do less cost for now..thanks for input.....

Well I have a '98 cummins 12V that only has 77858 on the clock and I was going to swap it into my Chevy but I got my 93 running good again so iI dont want to go through the hassel of swapping it to the 98 motor ... I would let it go for 3K you pay shipping .... It needs an oil pan and a harmonic balancer ... thats it ... Found an oil pan new on CL for 129 and a balancer for 159 ... My 93 has over 400k and still going strong ... working on twin turbo setup .. still dont use any oil ... @ 7000 mile change interval ... Been running it on WMO for about 70k now and just rebuilt the pump and it showed no signs of wear inside ....

No thanks..I already have the cummings..just cheaper to fix the ford & unload it or find a driver & use it as a project/huntin/pullin rig..machine work & gaskets set all new 3400 &all new cummings.

I don't get why you were so quick to pull the motor and do all that work? If it was running right but just making a little noise, it seemed like the way to go would have been to test the injectors, fix the offending glow plug, check the cylinder for compression, and keep on rolling. The con rod (IMHO) was a long shot to have been bent since it was only a glow plug tip that broke off, have you seen/heard of those bending from glow plug tips before? I've rebuilt waterlogged engines and seen them bent but never from something as small as as a GP tip.

One other question; It seems like you talk like a mechanic but you aren't doing your own work...why not?
