I wrote last week saying thanks, but now i have a question. My truck runs and runs great but its getting poor fuel mileage and it will not blow out any black smoke. Could i be off a tooth or two on the timing is that were my problem is??????? Truck has new rebuilt pump, new standyne injectors not rebuilt, and new lift pump and new fuel filters, my 1988 non-turbo was better than this, but remember my injection pump on this 94 was over 180 degree out and would not run at all thanks

Does anyone have any advice, need some help please, and yes i did line up my y's on both gears just not sure why i can get any black smoke, and why my fuel mileage stinks

Doesn't sounds to me like you've had the timing properly set with a dynamic meter yet, is that true? That would be the first step, as it would both verify you got the gear back on right, and also ensure that the pump is adjusted properly.

What do you mean by a meter? Also the injection pump was a rebuilt i didn't realize you had to set it, how do i do this and how about this dynamic meter? I am going to pull the pump and gear back off and double check it but not sure on pump adjusting you are talking about. thanks

To run properly it needs to be dynamically timed, just like an electric ignition car with a distributor.
You can get it close by ear by moving the IP slightly. Which way depends on how it is running, if you get it to far advanced it will burn the glow plugs up fast... I know firsthand.

I hope your is not pulling the gear cover off! Leave the gear cover alone. If you already lined up the 'Y's, its not that part of the timing that is off.

Had to pull cover guy i bought truck from pull unit off with gear attched to pump and the cover. Relined the y's but not sure cause it hard to install the cover over the gearwith the gear in place so i am going to pull it all back apart and mark both gears and the front tin sheild and ip gear and then try it again. Last diesel i had just in ip and lined up marks on gear cover and ip and went on and it worked great. I just don't understand the poor fuel mileage and no black smoke even when you stand on it.

I wouldn't mess with the gears any more until you get a timing meter on it. You don't know how far it is off, and could only make matters worse if you try to change the gearing.

if it runs ok the gears most likely lined up.

Please leave it alone. Don't pull the pump and attached gear cover. First try to advance the pump by loosening the three nuts that are 9/16th hex. The lower ones are hard to reach. Turning the top of the pump towards the passenger fender is advancing the pump. Only move the thickness of a dime or 1/16th inch and test that. What Mel does is makes a punch mark on the joint between the pump case and the gear cover its attached too. That way you will see how much you have moved the pump from where it is now. This way you can always turn it back if thats what you want to do. Don't depend on other timing marks on the pump or gear cover. They really don't mean anything... All pumps being rebuilt or installed will have a differant timing spec built into them. At the Rally this year I had Mel replace my Moose pump for another Moose pump. In all the timing of these trucks mine was the only truck that needed to be retarded in timing. The pump was too far advanced as it was installed. It was 12 1/2 advanced.... Sounded great but 3 degrees too far advanved.

I am just wondering why I have the bad fuel mileage and can not get any black smoke at all. When i had my non-turbo 1988 it would get 17-19 miles per gallon and allthis one gets is 8-10 and that tells me there is a problem. i do have a lot of white smoke when i first start it and it does this till it warms up and it usually take 2 or 3 tries to get it started.

Have pulled and checked everythingout and all is in time so i moved ip to driverside and truck is still the same. Runs awesome but no black smoke and poor mileage. Should i mover the ip about 1 more mark and try it?

Be carefull moving it around like that with out knowing exactly where it's at. As far as not having any black smoke, if it is set to factory spec's, it's not going to have much smoke if any at all. If you're comparing to the mileage of an older truck, make sure you're not comparing apples to oranges. I've got two trucks that run on the road every day, one has 3.55 rear gears and gets nearly 20mpg. The other has 4.10 gears and might get 12 on a good day.

Thats what i am trying to figure out, but i am not even getting 7-8 if your lucky. My 1988 none turbo got 16-19 and i have the same set up now just with a turbo. But the tires are also smaller than the ones on my 88 it had 285 75 16 and my 94 has 235 85 16. But other than the tires everything else is the same. I need to figure out the 2nd to 3rd shift on e4od any suggestions would be great, my 1988 also had a c6 and i now have a e40d
