7.3idi Injection and Injection Pump Timing

Hey all, I have a 90 7.3IDI with a Banks Turbo and Propane injection. I am pretty sure the pump and injectors have been replaced sometime in the life of the truck. I got it stock except for the Banks kit, it'd been owned by two guys, one who towed a fifth wheel on occasion and also a cab/over camper. The second guy just towed a small boat a few times a month but otherwise used it as a third vehicle.

I thought it was smoking a bit too much after I got it so I turned the pump down a flat...which was too much and even though it barely gray-hazed at the floor, I lost power. So I then turned it back up .5 a flat, and kept it at that. It'll puke a good bit when romping on it, and has good power, but I'm wondering a few things...

1) After installing the propane injection I never messed with the injection again, so it's still -.5, should I turn it up just because of that? I've read that with the propane and the turbo you can turn your pump a good amount up and gain good power. As it is my turbo has barely any lag and when I hit the propane the boost climbs rapidly.
2) How would I tell if the injection has already been changed? Smoke/Mpg's? I get 14-15 city average. Don't know what I should expect
3) Should I actually try to tweak the pump timing? >Take the gear cover off, maybe advance it a tad. Is it worth it?


Thanks and let me know, trying to have the fastest, best running 7-3IDI Turbo I can, as it is it's a good runner but I'm always trying to heighten it.

Whatever you do DON'T remove that cover with the oil fill on it. To time it you have to loosen the three nuts that clamp the IP to that housing. Turning it to the passengers side advances the timing, drivers side retards it. You can try to time by ear, but it's always best to have a timing device like a Ferrett and a good digital timing light. Turbo timing is 8.5 to 9.5 BTDC. If your getting that kind of mileage city, I would leave it alone, unless you have a timing device.

Alright, that's what I was wondering. I figured it couldn't be that much off but I've been reading how some people strongly suggest tweaking timing and some don't even give it a thought. Thanks!
