I have no answers here. If your engine is apart, which I'm assuming that it is, just use the balancer that you have and have the entire rotating assembly balanced.
This is the correct answer in my opinion. I also would bet that there are thousand's of IDI's running around with 100's of thousands of miles on them with the wrong Harmonic Balancer on them or not the one they came with from the factory.
I also call ******** on the flex plate/flywheel myth. The turbo ones may have been different but it has nothing to do with balancing the engine.

Would be interesting to know what the difference is, since luk has different part numbers for factory turbo or not on solid flywheels.

Different diameters?
My thinking on this is if that if one needs to be heavier or lighter due to engine balancing then every manufacturer would have to make every one a specific weight. So in example, if the turbo flex plate ones were (making up numbers here) 3 lbs and the non turbo was 2 lbs then every single manufactures all weight the exact same?
If you say yes then International would have had to make engines for automatic and stick transmissions. Because how would you take a 3 lb flex plate off and hang a 30 lb flywheel or a 60 lb dual mass flywheel on the same engine. Nobody thinks twice of changing from a auto trans to a stick or dual mass to a single mass flywheel.

The harmonic balancer Nero posted look to me like the new one is solid and the dirty one has rubber between the hub and outside so is that the difference in them? I would like to know the weight of each of them.

I have one of each of the flywheels here somewhere. Will try to look in the next few days.

Not going to be about overall weight, but about weight offset built in to the flywheel.

Is interesting though that ford says the differences cannot be seen, other than part number.

I haven't sent off the balancer yet, I'll see if I can find a scale...

I scanned the thread but didn't see the mention of the actual timing ....
Is there a difference between the keyways and tdc marks between the two?

No they look identical. Tried to align them closely when I took the photos.

Heres the verdict, turbo balancer is 11.6lbs, new n/a balancer is also 11.6lbs.
The old n/a balancer I pulled off the block I'm building is 10.2lbs... Maybe I have two turbo balancers?

Here's the old n/a next to the original turbo balancer. Turbo being on top. Definitely more meat on the center metal part...

Maybe not. Look at the picture of the fronts. On the N/A balancer, there seems to be more material between the bolt hole that's at 6 O'clock and the one at 9 O'clock than on the Turbo one. Then again, maybe it's just the way I see the pictures?

I honestly would be surprised if there were more than 1,000 IDIs left on the road.
