6.9 problems

My friend just got a 6.9 idi in excellent shape. Or so he thought. Once he started driving it became apparent that once fully warmed up it starts unbelievably hard and. The wts light doesn't turn on. But if you wait a few hours the wts light works and it starts with no problems. I'm dreading the fact that it could be an ip because I will be doing all the work it needs. Can anyone tell me if it is in fact an injection pump going out?

What is Heat Soak?

Before you go off on a tangent and get a new IP, they are very expensive. Check it out by pouring some room temp water on the IP when it won't start hot, a 8 oz bottle will do, then see if it starts. That is a good sign of "heat soak". Ip's have very close tolerances, in actuality pouring the water over it shrinks the outer case, maybe a 1/2 thou (.0005). If you need to replace the IP, read rthe Tech Articles first on how to do it, if you have never done it before.

Ok well the water worked. But here is another few questions. I have an old 7.3 idi that I can take the ip off. Can I use a 7.3 pump on a 6.9 or will it pump too much fuel. Also I went ahead and pulled the 7.3 ip already and gasoline came out. Do you think it's still any good even though somebody must have ran gas through it

It will work, so long as theyre both NA, I would try it before buying a new one, regardless of the gas.

Thanks. I switched the pump and bleed the lines. It started and idled for about a minute then I gave it throttle and when I let off it stalled and It won't start again. Need to bleed them again?

More than likely there is still air in the lines. Crack injector lines open where it connects to injector and start it up. Let it run for a while then tighten lines. Sounds to me like there is an air gap

Ok so I bled it again and it idles fine. And I drove it and it revs good. But it still stalls after you let off the throttle.

Stalls and completely dies? Or just hesitates?

It stalls completely but starts right back up. The injectors where bleed twice and spray fuel fine. I was reading around and found people with similar problems where there is something stuck inside the ip. They say it usually clears up with a fuel filter full of diesel clean. Figure I'll try it in the morning along with a new filter

That's odd, Maybe your idle is set too low? What does it idle at when started?
