Hi All,

I have a 56 Ford COE that I'm rebuilding/customizing, etc... I have a Detroit Diesel 8.2L V8 Turbo engine that I may swap into the Ford that has a dead old gas V8.

Anyone who has info/specs on the Detroit 8.2L V8 diesel engine, that would be cool. I think it's a 2 stroke, but that's about all I know about it. I have an older F7000 4x4 Ford with the same engine, no turbo, runs well, but needs more power, so, I figure the turbo version does the trick.

I play with Ford 7.3 V8 diesels, but the GM 8.2 looks very different.

Thanks for having this nice site.

I look forward to interacting with you!

welcome.
we have two Detroit mechanics lurking here. "typ4" and "geonc" are unparalleled resources on keeping the "fuel pincher" 8.2 alive. please don't be offended if it's called a boat anchor. it's not one of Detroit's better motors.

Ignore the boat anchor comment... ^^^^^^^^

It's too much of a PITA to throw over the side to be worth it. ;Poke:rotflmao

Welcome to the forum.

Personally, I think I'd go with an engine that is more readily available (I hate having to change things later), BUT, since it is a custom job, go with whatever engine you WANT, not what other people suggest to you. ;Sweet

8.2 is a 4 stroke with an open deck design of the block. Older engines blew gaskets pretty easily as the cylinders are free standing and would move ever so slightly around the fire ring .

Excellent! Good to know all this stuff. I'm sure it's old school. Mine is an official Detroit Remanufactured unit, using all genuine Detroit parts, or so they say on the label. I don't see glow plugs like I've seen on my old 6.2L Chevy V8, I don't see injectors either, but I see fuel lines entering the back of the valve covers, one on each side, so, perhaps all the goods are under the valve covers??? That could be an oily mess. I've worked on my 10 and 14 liter Cummins 6's in my big rigs. This unit is a bit more "unique" to me. We'll see how it goes.

The truck will probably become a custom rollback wrecker, that I'll only use for my private hauls, friends, etc... However, I want lots of grunt to haul two pickups on the rollback (one on the stinger) and not have any slow down going uphills, etc... I want this rig to be STRONG! I suspect the 8.2 "fuel pincher" isn't designed for "grunt". If it's not suitable, I'll probably jump up to a Cummins M10. Please let me know what you all think about these plans. Thanks!

Cool. I'm looking to attach a pic of the rig in it's original found condition. Can newbies attach pics here? That Ford is a conventional cab and has a nose. Mine is a "snubnose" and taller. That rollback has a gas V8, which I'm sure does fine for what he does - I have an 01 Chevy Silverado 2500HD 4x4 with an 8.1 Big Block Gasser and it tows an all steel deck tandem axle 8 lug car/pickup hauling trailer and rarely slows down on hills. Now I want a diesel to do that with two pickups in tow. I'll probably buy a wrecked rollback and put the COE body on the whole truck.

IDIoit - may be too soon for September, but I'll try to have it running and licensed by then. Let me know a bit more about Billetproof, sounds cool. I'm a native of the Socialist Republic of California, but like so many others, I left there in 09 for the freedom of Nevada and no personal income tax. When Cali personal tax got to 12 percent, I was gone. Plus, Nevada roads are AMAZING! They keep them in excellent condition and they're a pleasure to drive on. Everytime I go to Cali now, I curse all the potholes and rough roads. Obviously, the money to fix the roads has gone for freebies to the welfare state. You're welcome to come to Nevada and experience our freedom and logic and fun anytime! (how do I turn off auto spelling correction on this site???)

Hi Jwalterus, please explain PITA for me. Is that a derivative of POS? LOL

I'm not married to the 8.2 Detroit, just trying to find out some info and experiences with it, etc... I'm a straight 6 guy when I need power and reliability, but I got this Detroit 8.2 for $250 at an auction to replace a non-turbo dog 8.2 in a Ford F7000 4x4 Genny Van I have, plus it's a short form factor that would fit under the COE body, etc... The original frame is gone and they stuffed the body on a bigger tandem axle chassis, so, we're removing the body in the next few days to see what's underneath. The body may end up on a late model straight 6 rollback wrecker chassis. I just have to see how the sourcing and budget works out. Meanwhile, we have a TON of bodywork to do to get this thing shining again. Thanks for replying and good to meet you!

I think I got a couple first pics up here. Not the best, but the next ones will be better as we progress...

Ah, good ol Antioch. We used to have a boat down on the delta and cruise by all the time. If I can get it functional by September, I'll get on down there. Thanks!
